The Life and Legacy of Bettye Solomon

“Well done thou good and faithful servant”
Enter thou into the joy of the Lord. Matthew 25:21
A Time to Be Born
On December 8, 1939, a daughter was born to the late Lucy Mae Davis and Jay Journey who was named Bettye. Bettye was the oldest of four other siblings; three of whom preceded her in death.

A Time to Be Educated
At an early age, Bettye received her education at the Historical Macon County Training School. Bettye later became very interested in pressing and curling hair (Cosmetology). Under the watchful eye of Mrs. Jessie Lamar, she mastered this talent and became quite a professional at it.

A Time to Serve
As a young girl, Bettye’s family was spiritually inclined. She joined the Magnolia Baptist Church, where she served in several capacities until her health began to fail her. She served on the #1 Usher Board, Missionary Board and Deaconess Board. Our mother enjoyed helping others in their time of need. She worked in several capacities, at Southern Frozen Food and Gold King as a packer/grader for 20 years or more. Not only was she employed in these jobs, but she was also a beautician in her home. As a single parent our mother toiled to make sure we were provided for. In 1975, she became employed with Macon County Retardation Center which later became Quality Enterprises where she was dedicated to working with children and adults with disabilities. Bettye was also a member of the D.F. Douglass Hornets Booster Club, Volunteer Parent for Hornets choir, a member of the Pink Ladies at the Flint River Hospital.

On July 3, 1984, Bettye became a member of the Eunice Chapter #164 Order of Eastern Stars, where she was a dedicated and distinguished member. On October 20, 2019, she was presented in recognition as a Life Member of the Americus District No 14, Order of the Eastern Star for 35 consecutive years of service.

A Time to Rejoice
On May 24th, 2022, God sent His angels down after we all let her know that it was okay for her to go. The Angels softly whispered and said, “My Child, you have suffered long enough, and it is now time for you to leave your earthly home and come to your heavenly home, where the Father will be standing at the gates with your family; Mother Lucy, Sister Vivian, Brothers Leon and Charlie James and her only son-in-law Frank.” Bettye humbly replied, “Master, I am on my way Home.”

A Time to Remember
In the celebration of her life, Bettye leaves to cherish her memories a devoted ex-husband, John Lee Solomon, Montezuma, Ga. Four children, Gilbert Howard, Montezuma, Ga, Vickie Miller (Frank) Tampa, Fl, Camille Howard, Perry, Ga, and Kim Howard (Sammie), Byron, Ga. Two Sisters Vera Wynn, Atlanta, GA and Betty Collier, Oglethorpe, Ga. Fifteen grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren. A host of loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

The memories that we will always cherish of our Mama, our sister, our Tee-Tee, our Grandma, our co-worker, our significant other and friend will live in our hearts forever. Bettye Solomon was loved.
