Shirley Harris Thomas, age 62, 147 Mitchell Street, DeSoto, Georgia passed Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at the Houston Medical Center, Warner Robins, Georgia.
 
The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 260 West Allen Street, Leslie, Georgia. The Reverend Willie James Hill, pastor, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Davis Chapel A.M.E. Church Cemetery, GA Highway 26 West, Oglethorpe, Georgia.
 
Shirley, lovingly known as “Sook,” was born September 26, 1955 in Macon County, Georgia to the late Annie Will Harris and the late Willie Lewis Hollis.  She was educated in the public school system of Macon County. She was preceded in death by her uncle, Eugene Harris and aunt, Lucille Maddox. 
 
Shirley, along with other family members, joined the Davis Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Hudson, and she later moved her membership to Zion Hill Baptist Church of Leslie Georgia. “Sook” exemplified her work on every facet of the church she loved so well. She had an open ear to everyone, as well as being very outspoken.  If she was “happy” or “unhappy” …you knew it. She enjoyed cooking and loved sharing her delicious meals with her community. She truly loved caring for her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.  She was employed with Davidson Rubber Company for 30 years, a very hard worker and made everybody around her work just as hard.
 
On Wednesday, July 26, 2017, “Sook” peaceably took her last breath.  A dear and precious wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbor is gone from us; a voice we love is silent, and a place in our hearts is vacant – that can never be filled. 
 
Shirley was united in holy matrimony to Willis Thomas, Sr. and to this union they were blessed with four children, Pamela Harris, Warner Robins, Georgia, Jonathan Thomas (Sonya) Americus, Georgia, Kenneth Thomas (Antria), DeSoto, Georgia and Willis Thomas, Jr. Warner Robins, Georgia; eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild; six sibling, Gerald Harris Sr. (Tamica), Velma Harris Thomas (Eddie)  all of DeSoto, Georgia, Shelman Cotton,  Kansas City, Kansas, Chester Cook, Ideal, Georgia and Timothy Hollis (Stephanie), and Tina Woods (Adrian) and Eddie Holt all of  Buena Vista, Georgia; mother-in-law, Clara Bell Thomas, Leslie, Georgia; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Alice Reddick (Ned), Ethel Franklin (Berlin) and Carolyn Whitehead all of Leslie, Georgia, Leroy Thomas (Debra), Vidalia, Georgia, Joann Green (Willie C.), Miami, Florida, Betty Joe Day (Roger), Albany, Georgia; aunts and uncles, Odessa Harris, Ft. Valley, Georgia, Ollie Harris, and Nellie Kate Range Collin, both of Oglethorpe, Georgia, and Thomas Denmark, Ellaville, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, devoted cousins, other relatives and friends.

Daisy L. Westbrook, age 91, of 207 Byrd Street passed on Monday, July 24, 2017 at 167 Harper Sub Road, Americus, GA, in the home of her devoted grand-daughter and caregiver, Tammy Williams.
 
The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Friendship Baptist Church, 411 Cotton Avenue, Americus, Georgia.  The pastor, Bishop Melvin McCluster, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Eastview Cemetery, Ashby Street, Americus, Georgia.  The remains will be laid in state from 12:00 p.m. until the hour of service.
 
Daisy Lee Westbrook was born March 29, 1926 to the late Annanias Westbrook and the late Minnie Martin Westbrook in Leslie, Sumter County, Georgia. She was preceded in death by two sons, Alphonso Westbrook and Johnny L. Westbrook.  Born in a family of eight, she was preceded in death by seven siblings: Carrie Westbrook-Harvey, Ethel Westbrook, Willie Westbrook, Bessie Westbrook-Sutton, Rosa Westbrook-Jackson, Lonnie Westbrook and Leroy Westbrook.  She was educated in the public school system of Sumter County.  She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined the membership of Welcome Baptist Church and later joined the Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Daniel Thomas.  She exemplified her worth on every facet of the church she loved so well.  After thirty years of dedicated services, she retired as a Custodian of the formerly known as Americus High School, wherein she was more than a custodian but stood strong as a “guardian angel” to the African-American students during the time of desegregation.  She retired from the Americus City Board of Education.
 
She leaves to cherish her memories her beloved family and the community at large which include her two surviving children, Minnie R. Westbrook and Dan W. Westbrook both of Americus, Georgia; nineteen grandchildren three of whom she reared as her own, Tammy Williams and Dwandelyn-Hall (Elder Shelby) and Dawn Westbrook all of Americus, Georgia; Angela Foster, Valerie Porter (Eric), Corene Westbrook-Milledge, Andre Westbrook, Lorenzo Walters, Allison Carter, Joyce Carter, George Carter, Jr. (Sandra);  Kelsey Westbrook, Shonda Phelphs (Robert),  Johnny Westbrooks, Jr., Ananias Westbrook (Sharon), Simone Westbrook, Amber Westbrook, Christian Westbrook, Brandon Ellis, Miay Westbrook; thirty-eight great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a host of beloved nieces and nephews including two devoted nieces, Bessie Jackson and Bennie Jackson;  a host of loving cousins including Virgirie Thomas and Philaphine Logan, Gloria Lewis- Franklyn, and James Martin; four daughters-in-law Berdia Winn, Ora D. Westbrook, Nancy Westbrook and Veronica Arline; a devoted grandson GeoVante Carter; a devoted god-son, Robert Dudley, (Ernestine); god-daughter Kennedy Johnson; a host of beloved friends including Lillie Smith, Margaret Mathis, Alberta Rowell and Selma Smith; two devoted caregivers,  Alice Muff and Cornelia Sims.

Shaun Vincent Gary, age 39, passed on July 21, 2017 at his residence.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, July 29, 2017 at St. John A.M.E. Church, 220 South Hudson Street, Plains, Georgia. Reverend Shirley Strawter, pastor, will officiate.  Burial will follow at Lebanon Cemetery in Plains, Georgia.

Shaun Vincent Gary was born in Americus, Sumter County, Georgia to Dudley Gary and the late Shirley Sheppard Gary on November 29, 1977. He was educated in the public school system of Sumter County where he attended Sumter County Comprehensive High School, Americus, Georgia.

He was employed with various companies including Hickory Springs, Plains Product Inc., and Perdue Farms. He also enjoyed working with his father doing masonry work. At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined the band of Christian Believers at St. John A.M.E. Church in Plains, Georgia.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his father, Dudley Gary, Americus, Georgia; two siblings, Tiffany Gary and Shannon (Tanickey) Harris, all of the Columbus, Georgia; five nieces, Nyesha Gary, Dabresha Gary, Nykeria Brown, Kyndall Waldon, and M’Kenley Gary; two nephews, Lamarcus Murphy, Jr., and Ty’Quarious Murphy; two godsons, Dequarious Burton and Desmond Burton, Jr.; aunts, Inez Battle (Johnny), Bertha Bruce (Walt), all of Plains, Georgia; uncles, Larry Sheppard (Connie), Jacksonville, Florida, Willie Sheppard, Atlanta, Georgia; great aunts Clara Daniels and Queenie Gary both of Americus, Georgia  a host of cousins and friends including devoted cousins Iletha Durham, Desmond Burton Sr., Moses Jackson, Jerry Boone, and Lisa Cross; devoted sister and brother-in-law, Chinquita Laster (Gabriel); devoted friends Shanetta Thomas, Curtis Boddy, and Cynthia Bridges.

Dana Louise Mitchell, age 27, 713 Lewis Street, Montezuma, Georgia passed away on Monday, July 10, 2017. 
 
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Magnolia Baptist Church, 415 Hosie Waters Street, Montezuma, Georgia.  Reverend Hosie Waters, pastor, will officiate.  Interment will follow at the Champ Waters Cemetery, Twin Church Road, Montezuma, Georgia. 
 
Dana Louise Mitchell, better known as “Dana Dayne,” was born in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia August 13, 1989 to the beloved parents of Gloria McKenzie Mitchell and the late Ernest Woodrow Mitchell.  Dana grew up in Montezuma, Georgia with her beloved grandparents the late Officer Freddie Mallard and the late Mrs. Carolyn Mallard.  Dana was a member of the Magnolia Baptist Church where she acquired her Christian training in the church and Sunday school.
 
Dana, following the guidance of her parents and grandparents, learned early in life her path of duty.  She exemplified her worth with the following ministries: Youth Choir, Vacation Bible School teacher, helped with the Easter Programs, and the Youth Department.  From age five to seventeen she was a participant in the Southwest Georgia Missionary Baptist Association, Inc., of Americus, Georgia. She ranked first place in the oratorical contest. She represented the church well in all its facets.  She was the recipient of many awards and certificates.   She was recognized and awarded on the following: Martin Luther King, Jr. Program, 216 Rosa F. Erving Queen Extravaganza Award, and on Deacon S. T. Hannor Programs she was most recognized as she spoke on, “Give People Their Flowers While They’re Alive,”  and she was master of ceremony and roaster  for the banquet for Mrs. Annie Kate West’s Banquet.
 
She was an honor student and worked very hard to acquire the education she so desired.  With her books before her and a pencil in her hand, she strived for the best in her life.  From Kindergarten, to high school and on throughout college she exemplified her true talent.  In 2007 she graduated from Macon County High School with honors and played a dynamic roll in basketball and track and field.
 
Dana was very active in all her job opportunities and what would help her and her family in obtaining her college education.  She worked in several places as a waitress at Cracker Barrel and Longhorn both in Perry, Georgia.  During this period she earned her degree from South Georgia Technical College where she received her associate degree in 2010.  On May 2, 2015 she received her degree in Criminal Justice from Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley, Georgia.  During her tenure at Fort Valley State University she was employed at GA Mental Health as a Paraprofessional at Morning Star Children and Family Services, Inc. of Reynolds, Georgia and Fort Valley State Trio for four years.  She was awarded Outstanding Student of the Year.  Following the foot print of her parents and grandparents she joined Eunice Chapter No. 164 OES of Montezuma, Georgia.    She served as conductress for the Chapter; she also was the 2016 queen of Eunice Chapter No. 164 OES.  During her reign she competed in the Americus District No. 14 where she won 2nd place.  In the district she served as the 5th point on the star. 
 
Those of us who will remember her loving and caring ways are her beloved son and heart, Jaiden Amir Coleman, Montezuma, Georgia; mother, Gloria Mitchell, Montezuma, Georgia; siblings, Quinton Jabara Mitchell and Samaria Danyon Mitchell both of Warner Robins, Georgia;  grandmother, Ruby Williams, Atlanta, Georgia; uncles and aunts, LaNorris Jolly (Barbara) Warner Robins, Georgia, Obie Ann Turner, Decatur, Georgia, John Mitchell (Dorothy) College Park, Georgia, Eva Nelloms, Betty Simmons, Barbara Mitchell, Annie Ruth Mitchell, and Jackie Lloyd Mitchell all of Atlanta, Georgia; great aunts and great uncles,  Muriel Harris (Willie James), Oglethorpe, Georgia, Betty Clark, Jacqueline Clark, Manuel Clark, Constance Baldwin, Dan V. Clark, Liza B. Sanders (Thomas) all of Montezuma, Georgia and Elsie Mallard Martin, Warner Robins, Georgia; and a host of beloved cousins and caring friends including Magnolia Baptist Church and Fort Valley State University.

Mrs. Catherine C. Murray, age 69, 1027 Georgia Highway 26 East, Buena Vista, Georgia passed Sunday, July 9, 2017 at the Magnolia Manor, Marion County, Georgia in the loving surrounding of her beloved family.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 121 East Bridges Street, Buena Vista, Georgia, where Rev. Poole is pastor. Rev. Angienette Coppins Damiani, pastor of the Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, Buena Vista, Georgia will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Union Hill A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Spivey Street, Ellaville, Georgia.

Catherine was born on March 25, 1948 in Ellaville, Schley County to the late Una B. Storey Hickey and the late James Collins.  She was the youngest of two children; a brother, Bennie K. Murray, preceded her in death. Catherine was raised in the home by her grandparents, the late Bennie and Eva Storey, along with their seven children - four girls, Una B, Ella Pearl, Irene, and Eva Mae, and three boys Robert Lee, Leonard, and Frank. Catherine was a 1966 graduate from John Lewis High School in Ellaville, Georgia where she graduated with honors.  Being raised in a Christian home she joined Union Hill A.M.E. Church at an early age in Ellaville, Georgia. She was united in holy matrimony to Hudson Murray in June 1976.  She later joined Bethel A.M.E. Church, Buena Vista, Georgia.  She served as a church secretary, stewardess board, secretary missionary board, and supported all facets of the church she loved so well.

She was employed by the Schley County Board of Education as teacher assistant and a Head start teacher in Buena Vista, Georgia with West Center Georgia CAC and Southwest Georgia of Buena Vista, Georgia .  She took classes at Albany State University and Tuskegee where she received her CDA.  Catherine was one of the first teachers to start Tri-County Head Start. She was employed by Home Interior as a Interior Decorator.  Catherine was a caring person who shared her love and inspired others to greater heights in life. 

She leaves to cherish her memories: a loving husband of forty-one years, Hudson Murray, Buena Vista, Georgia; four children, Anthony T. Collins (Mary Ann), New Port News, Virginia, Tonya Hall (Christopher), Buena Vista, Georgia, Kedrix Murray, (Staci), Douglassville, Georgia, and Deceithia Murrary McCreary, Jonesboro, Georgia; grandchildren, Terrance Collins, Tiara Hall, Tenia Hall, Breanna  Collins, Davanna Small, Vyani Murray, Eycis Murray, Kesiya Murray, Kiari Murrary, Kace Murrary, Cameron Bookman and Demetrius McCreary; great grandchildren, Xander McCreary and Jakhyia Hall; aunts and uncles, Ella Pearl Williamson, Ellaville, Georgia, Irene Storey Edge (E.J.), Ellaville, Georgia, Eva Mae Stephenson, Atlanta, Georgia, Robert Lee Storey, Clarksville, Tennessee, and Frank Storey, Atlanta, Georgia; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, David Murray (Rethe), Cleveland, Ohio, Mable Murray Johnson (Ernest) Cleveland, Ohio, Willie Murray (Velma), Decatur, Georgia, Otis Murrary (Fannie), Vera Murray all of Buena Vista, Georgia and Lenora Murray, Ft. Minister Alma Marie Griffin Golphin, age 55, 328 Stewart Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia passed Sunday, July 9, 2017 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, Georgia.  
 
The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 P.M., Friday, July 14, 2017 at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Corner of Russell and Johnson Streets, Oglethorpe, Georgia, where Reverend Norris Harris is pastor.  The Reverend Lewis Burton, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow at 2:00 P.M. in the Andersonville National Cemetery, Andersonville, Georgia.
 
Minister Alma Marie Griffin Golphin was born July 25, 1961 in Oglethorpe, Macon County, Georgia to the late Willie Griffin, Sr. and the late Marie Sturnes Griffin. Born in a family of thirteen she was preceded in death by two brothers, S. T. Griffin and Sammie Griffin.
 
She was educated in the public school system of Macon County and Chattanooga, Tennessee where she received her high school diploma in 1980. She later earned her degree in early childhood development and open a day care center from her home.
 
At an early age she joined the St. Paul A.M.E. Church of Oglethorpe, Georgia.  She later joined the New Life Holiness Church under the leadership of Elder Johnny Lundy.   In 2001, the fifteenth of April she was married to Reverend Freddie Golphin.  As a result of their union, they joined New Bethel Baptist Church of Dooly, Georgia. After her husband became the pastor of Little Creek Baptist Church of Byromville, she moved her membership there, where she have worked diligently and supported every ministry of the church she loved so well.
 
She leaves a legacy of love and many fond memories to her beloved husband of sixteen years, Reverend Freddie Golphin, Oglethorpe, Georgia;  her beloved children, Kelvin Stewart, Alfrederick Golphin, Camron Golphin all of Oglethorpe, Georgia, Dwan Rogers (Jeff), Ellaville, Georgia, Tyrone Golphin (LaShawn), Andera Golphin all of Jacksonville, Florida, Denise Golphin, Ellaville, Georgia and Jayvis Golphin, Jacksonville, Florida; seventeen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; ten siblings, Fannie Carter (Leroy) Jacksonville, Florida, Rosa Lee Perkins, Macon, Georgia, R. C. Mrs. Gwendolyn McMillian McKenzie, age 51, South Dooly Street, Apt. #10, Montezuma, Georgia passed Saturday morning, July 8, 2017 at the home.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Shady Grove Baptist Church, White Water Road, Ideal, Georgia. Reverend David Thomas, pastor, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Oglethorpe City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Oglethorpe, Georgia.
 
Gwen, as she was affectionately called, was born June 25, 1966 to Mary Frances Harris McMillian and the late Edward McMIllian. She was preceded in death by one sister, Sonya McMillian Miller.  She was educated in public school system of Macon County where she was a 1984 graduate of Macon County High School of Montezuma, Georgia.  She was a 1986 graduate of South Georgia Technical College of Americus, Georgia with a degree in Cosmetology.  Gwen went on to be a Cook Supervisor with Macon State Prison and after several years of dedicated service, she retired due to declining health.   She was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church and the wife of the late Lawrence McKenzie.
 
She leaves a legacy of love and many fond memories to her beloved son, grandchildren, mother, siblings and other beloved family members.  Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy (Andreika) Westberry, Montezuma, Georgia; two grandchildren, Jewun Westberry and Janiya Westberry both of Montezuma, Georgia; three stepchildren, Derrick McKenzie, Danna McKenzie and Breann McKenzie; mother, Mary Frances Harris McMillian, Oglethorpe, Georgia; sisters and brothers, Kimberly McMillian Paster, Montezuma, Georgia, Wylonda Jones (Alfred) Lithonia, Georgia, Michael Harp, Warner Robins, Georgia and Michael McMillian, North Carolina; aunts and uncles, Laura Ann Harris, Oglethorpe, Georgia, Earl Gene  (Aurora) Harris, Augusta, Georgia, Ernest Gaddy and Lorice Washington both of Tar Heel, North Carolina; five loving nieces and nephews, Julius (Lauren) Paster, San Antonio, Texas, Jada (Carl) Winchester, Charlotte, North Carolina, Jeremiah Walker and Kyler Phelps both of Montezuma, Georgia and Nicholas Phelps of Augusta, Georgia; brother-in-laws and sisters-in-laws, Shirley McKenzie, James McKenzie, Linda Diann Robinson (Ellie), Blanche Rocquemore (Clarence), John McKenzie, and Mamie Hudson (Kenneth); and a host of other relatives and friends.
