Ms. Mary Lavern McKellar, age 64, 880 Highway 90 West, Oglethorpe, Georgia passed April 6, 2011 at her home.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at Jehovah Baptist Church, 201 Chatham Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia. Interment will follow in the Oglethorpe City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Ms. Mary Lavern McKellar was born July 31, 1946 in Macon County, Georgia to the late Parker and Ora Lee Jordan McKellar. She grew up in Oglethorpe, Georgia and received her primary and secondary education in the public schools of Macon County. Mary confessed Christ at an early age and joined Jehovah Baptist Church where she served faithfully as long as her health permitted. While rendering service to Christ, she was elected to numerous positions and accomplished a multitude of duties and responsibilities. Included in her many assignments were: President of the Ushers’ Ministry, Sunday School Teacher, Member of the Missionary Ministry, Member of the Program Committee, Member of the Beautification Ministry, Member of the Culinary Ministry. Additionally, she was always ready to lend a hand wherever needed.

Mary attended the Fort Valley State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in education. After completing further study at the university, she earned her Master’s Degree. She was employed by the Macon County Board of Education where she taught third, fourth, and fifth grades. Not being one to become complacent, Mary continuously sought additional education. She later enrolled at Troy State University, Troy, Alabama where she continued her studies. Upon completing requirements, she was awarded her Six-Year Certificate which is just a step prior to a Doctorate Degree. After shaping and educating young minds for thirty-two years, she retired in 2001. Mary was a kind-hearted, compassionate person who cared for the young and old alike.

Mary loved things of beauty and took pride in her decorating ability. Many of her arts and crafts were things of beauty and a pleasure to behold. Her culinary skills were unsurpassed; she could make any food taste good. Being the only girl, growing up among four boys made her our pride and joy. We had several little cute pet names we called her, but “Sister' was the favorite and I think we used it most of all. This we’ll never forget.

She was a member of the Macon County Retired Educators’ Association, The Fort Valley State Macon County Alumni Chapter, Baccheus Chapter 124 Order of Eastern Star, American Association of Retired Persons, and the Hometown Development Committee.
