Pastor Joe Lewis Miller

Pastor Joe Lewis Miller, age 78, passed on Sunday, March 26, 2017.

The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Saturday April 1, 2017 at Friendship Baptist Church, 411 Cotton Avenue, Americus, Georgia. Apostle David Holt of Shabach International Ministries and Bishop Melvin McCluster will officiate. Interment will follow in the Oglethorpe City Cemetery Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Pastor Miller was born in Phoenix City, Alabama on January 10, 1939 to the parentage of Louise Riggins and Rufus Miller. He was educated in the Webster County School System and later resided in Americus, Georgia.

After school, Joe began his professional journey as a truck driver. He worked with several local companies before retiring after many years and many miles of service.

Pastor Miller began serving the Lord at an early age. He joined Christian Outreach Church International, Americus, Georgia under Bishop Harvey Claiborne. He went on to pastor Gulf Unlimited Love Fellowship, Ellaville, Georgia. He later connected with and joined Shabach Prophetic Word International Ministries under Chief Apostle David Holt and served as Co-Pastor. There he loved to worship God through singing, dancing, and teaching, and he continued until God called him home.

​Mrs. Ella Westbrook, age 102, 136 Foster Street, De Soto, Georgia passed Sunday, March 26, 2017 at her home.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Jackson Grove Baptist Church, 451 Pryor Road, DeSoto, Georgia, where Reverend Eugene Hall is Pastor. Minister Johnny Dean will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sue Walker Cemetery, Hwy 195, DeSoto Seed Farm Road, DeSoto, Georgia.

Ella was born July 3, 1914 in Cordele, Crisp County Georgia to the late Ed Westbrook and Cora Eva Collier Westbrook.  She was educated in the public school system of Wilcox County.  She was a member of Summerville Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida.

She was employed as a homemaker in several homes while living in Jacksonville, Florida. In 2013 she moved to DeSoto, Georgia where she lived until her demise. Two children, Henry Westbrook and W. H. Westbrook, and two grandchildren preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Johnny Westbrook, Jersey City, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Michon Crawford, Malissa Westbrook, Steve Westbrook and Donelle Westbrook, all of Newark, New Jersey; eight great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Louise Westbrook, Green Cove Spring, Florida and one devoted Ada Westbrook, Jacksonville, Florida; devoted nieces and nephews Takekie Johnson, Mattie Gary, Robert Westbrook, Dorothy Thomas, Edith Johnson, Beverly Terrell, and James Johnson, and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, devoted cousin Jessie Ezell, other relatives and friends including one devoted, Dale George.

Deacon L.D. Hinton, Jr., age 67, 233 Cora Drive, Ellaville, Georgia passed Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at the Phoebe Sumter Hospital, Americus, Georgia.
 
The funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 P.M., Sunday, March 26, 2017 at the William Grove Baptist Church, 71 Gill Street, Ellaville, Georgia, where Rev. Michael Edge is Pastor.  Rev. William Laster, Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Dozier Road, Ellaville, Georgia. 

Deacon Hinton was born October 20, 1949 in Macon County, Georgia to Nina Turner Hinton and the late L.D. Hinton, Sr. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Hinton and Willie Jessie Hinton. He was educated in the public school system of Macon County and was a 1967 graduate of the D.F. Douglass High School, Montezuma, Georgia.  On December 3, 1971 he was married to the former Ozella Marie Jones and to this union they were blessed with two children.  He joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Carl Munns.  He was ordained as a Deacon in 2005 and was a faithful and dedicated member until his health failed.  He retired after 33 years of dedicated service with Cooper Lighting as a forklift operator. 

He leaves to forever cherish his memories: his wife, Ozella Jones Hinton, Ellaville, Georgia; two devoted children, Minister Steven Derrick Hinton (Linda), Macon Georgia and Demetria L. Tommy Underwood, Jr., age 79, 651 Sales Road, (Tazewell Community), Buena Vista, Georgia passed Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at the Saint Francis Hospital, Columbus, Georgia.
 
The funeral service will be conducted 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Mount Olive Baptist Church, Moody Road, Buena Vista, Georgia. The Reverend Joe Oglesby, pastor, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.  The remains will lay in state at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service.
 
Tommy  Underwood, Jr. was born February 13, 1938 in Marion County, Georgia to the late Tommy Underwood, Sr. and the late Willie Mae Sampson Harris.  He was educated in the public school system of Marion County where he was a graduate of Buena Vista High School.  At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined the band of Christian believers at the Mount Olive Baptist Church of the Tazewell Community.  In 1975 Tommy married the love of his life, the former Mary Ann Holt.  To this beloved union they were blessed with two children, Shewann and Shaun. They were also blessed to be the grandparents of four beautiful grandchildren.
 
On Tuesday, March 21, 2017 the death angel sealed the lips of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and Christian friends. “ Servant of God, well done, rest from thy love employ, the battle is fought, the victory is won, enter thy master’s joy.”  He leaves a legacy of love and many fond memories to his beloved wife of forty two years,  Mary Ann Holt Underwood, Buena Vista, Georgia; two children, Shewann Underwood, Buena Vista, Georgia and Shaun Underwood (Kimberly), Hendersonville, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Jarriquez Underwood, Kaiden Underwood, both of Buena Vista, Georgia, Layla Underwood and Kali Green, both of Hendersonville, Tennessee; aunt, Lucille Sampson, Buena Vista, Georgia;  father-in-law,  Roy Holt, Buena Vista, Georgia; two brothers-in-law, Roy Holt Jr. (Pecoral), Larry Holt all of Buena Vista, Georgia; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mary Lee Hollis, age 75, passed on March 16, 2017.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Hall Chapel C.M.E. Church, Buena Vista, Georgia. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church, Buena Vista, Georgia.

Mary Hollis was born March 20, 1941, in Buena Vista, Marion County, Georgia to the late Peter King Wright and Addie Lee Wright.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Tommie King. She was educated in the public school system of Marion County. At an early age she confessed Christ as her personal Savior and joined the band of Christian believers at Hall Chapel C.M.E. Church in Buena Vista, Georgia. Mary was joined in holy matrimony to the late Willie Louis Hollis. Mary was a very caring person and it showed through her love of children. For over 12 years she worked as a self-employed babysitter.

She leaves to cherish her memories: one sister, Evelyn James, Florence, South Carolina; stepsons, Maurice Meridith and Michael Meridith, both of Melbourne, Florida; a niece, Sherri James, Plainsboro, New Jersey; goddaughter, Shenerika; and a host of devoted relatives and friends including Rev. & Mrs. Campbell and Family, Buena Vista, Georgia, Eugene and Rosa Mae Jackson and family, the Scott Family and Ann, Ronnie, Danny Williams all of Chicago, Mr. Leonard Minter and family of Buena Vista, Georgia, Valentia Bridges & Family, Bobby McKinney, Buena, Vista, Georgia; a childhood friend, Ms. Annie R. Minnie Lou Terry Sewell, age 82, of Ellaville, Georgia passed Tuesday, March 14, 2017 surrounded by her beloved family.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at New Corinth Baptist Church, Spivey Street, Ellaville, Georgia, where Reverend Brian Ramey is pastor. Bishop James Lundy, pastor of Tabernacle of Faith Holiness Church, Ellaville, Georgia, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, Ellaville, Georgia.

Minnie Lou was born October 16, 1934 in Ellaville, Schley County, Georgia to the late Charlie Terry and Jennie Harvey Terry.  She acquired her education in the Schley County public school system where she was a 1952 graduate of Ellaville High School.  She was married to the late Leory Sewell and to this union they were blessed with four children. She was preceded in death by her two oldest sons, Kenneth Owens and Bobby Owens; her brothers, Charlie Jr. and Terry; and sister Claudette Anderson.

She was a previous member of New Corinth Baptist Church and later had a new awakening in Christ and joined the Tabernacle of Faith Holiness Church under the administration of Bishop James Lundy. She retired from Mom’s Kitchen as a waitress after ten years of dedicated services. She moved back to her native home of Ellaville, Georgia in 1981.

She loved writing poems, attending Sunday school and Worship service, watching soap operas, and playing Gin Rummy.

Survivors are two sons, Timothy (Zelma) Owens, Cusseta, Georgia and Vincent Wilson, Ellaville, Georgia; three grandchildren, Charles Owens, Dextease Lamar Owens, Sr., and Valerie Ghant; two great grandchildren, Asia Hoskins and Dextease Lamar Owens, Jr.; siblings, Doris Terry, Ellaville, Georgia, Janice Sales (Wilbert), Fort Valley, Georgia, Mary Simpkins, Miami, Florida, Carolyn Wittenburg, Miami, Florida; devoted aunts, Julia Harvey, Lorene Harvey, Mary Jones, Christine Harvey Sales, all of Atlanta, Georgia; one uncle, Charlie Harvey, Americus, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Cherry Rudean Terry; one brother-in-law, Kletner Anderson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including a (BBF) Best Friend Forever, Minister Ellen Battle, Tazewell, Georgia.

Mrs. Bernice Fulks Edwards, age 64, 34 Altoona Place SW, Atlanta, Georgia (formerly of the Payne Bottom Community) passed March 13, 2017.  

The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the Travelers Home Baptist Church, Ideal, Georgia.  Minister Phillip Fowler will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Taylors’ Memorial Cemetery, Taylor Cemetery Road, Payne Bottom Community.

Mrs. Bernice Fulks Edwards was born July 29, 1952 to the parentage of the late Mr. Clarence, Sr. and Mrs. Emma Pearl Tookes Fulks in Macon County Georgia.  She was the tenth child to be born to this union. She was preceded in death by four siblings: her three brothers, Clarence Fulks, Jr., Henry Lester Fulks, and Walter Lee Fulks, and one sister, Gracie Fulks.  She was educated in the public school system of Macon County Georgia. Bunnie and Aunt Bunnie, as she was affectionately known and called by loved ones and friends, was a 1970 graduate of Dennis Fulton Douglass High School.  At an early age, she joined Travelers Home Baptist Church. After thirty years of dedicated service of employment for many families, she retired from private home keeping.

After graduating from high school, Bernice moved to Atlanta where she resided until her death.  In 1971, she met and married Mr. Alonzo Edwards.  Bernice was a fun-loving and proper lady.  She loved gardening and attending to her flowers and plants.

On Monday, March 13, 2017, Bernice peaceably took her last breath at her home.  A dear and precious sister, aunt, friend, and neighbor is gone from us; a voice we love is silent, and a place in our hearts is vacant – that can never be filled.  She had a laughter that would bring tears to those green-hazel shaded eyes of hers.  We will miss her sorely.

Family left to cherish her memories are her five loving sisters, Mrs. Bobbie Lee Hosley of Ellaville, Georgia, Mrs. Pearl Harris of Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Christine Bolden (Augustus) of Detroit, Michigan, Ms. Lillie Fulks of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mrs. Daisy Williams (Robert) of Atlanta, Georgia.  She also leaves many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends, as well as a special friend, Mr. John Thornton.

Kenney Gouch is Pastor.  The Rev. Zachariah Terry, Evans Chapel C.M.E. Church, 498 Enterprise Church Road, Preston, Georgia, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Evans Chapel C.M.E. Church Cemetery, 498 Enterprise Church Road, Preston, Georgia.  

Gloria “Dean” Battle was born September 24, 1952 in Webster County, Georgia to the late Ernest and Irene Ingram.  Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Cynthia Ingram and Betty McMurray. She was educated in the public school system of Webster County. She was a 1970 graduate of Webster County High School.  Gloria was a member of Evans Chapel C.M.E. Church, where she served on the Ushers’ Ministry.  She was employed at the Marion Memorial Nursing Home, Buena Vista, Georgia as a CNA. 

On October 16, 1976 she was united in holy matrimony to Henry Thomas Battle, Jr. and was blessed with two children,  Fredrick and Quentin. 

On Wednesday, March 15, 2017 Gloria Dean Battle exchanged her earthly life for eternity at the Midtown Medical Center, Columbus, Georgia.  

She leaves to forever cherish her memories: her husband, Henry Thomas Battle Jr., Buena Vista, Georgia; two devoted sons, Fredrick Battle (Melissa), Albany, Georgia and Quentin Dorain Battle (Shenequia), Cusseta, Georgia; six grandchildren, Fredresha Battle, Quentavious Battle, Quentez Battle, Ze’Kayla Blackshear, Kamaryn Battle, and LaDarius Thomas; two great grandchildren Jasiah Battle and Kaelynn Jacobs; two uncles Charlie Holloman, Richland, Georgia and James Battle Americus, Georgia; five aunts, Azzie Adams, Oakland, California, Airy D. Catherine Melvin, age 93, 506 Sumter Street, Montezuma, Georgia passed on Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Americus, Georgia.
 
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 18, 2017 at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 114 Johnson Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia, where Rev. Norris Harris is pastor. Interment will follow in the Davis Chapel Cemetery, Oglethorpe, Georgia. Repast will follow at the Davis Chapel A.M.E. Church. The body will lie in state at Davis Chapel A.M.E. Church, Oglethorpe, Georgia on Friday, March 17, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 P.M. The family will begin to accept visitation on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the residence of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Melvin located at 306 Green Mill Road, Andersonville, Georgia. Catherine Melvin was born on December 11, 1923 in Schley County, Georgia to the late Rachel and Sam Williamson. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined the band of Christian believers at Davis Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she served as “Mother of the Church” and sat on the Deaconess and Trustee Boards. She was joined in holy matrimony to John Henry Melvin in 1939. To this union they were blessed with eleven children. She was the 14th out of 15th siblings; all preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Henry Thomas Melvin and Joe McCuller, and one granddaughter, Barbara Felton.
 
She leaves to cherish her memories: ten children, Annie Pearl Hamilton (Cleve), Jimmy Melvin, Shirley Hawkins, Thelma Mitchell, Willie C. Melvin (Vernel), Mary King, John Melvin, Inez Owens (Larry), Rachel Clark (Jimmy), and Gail Rumph; a grandson she reared, Barry Melvin; twenty-four grandchildren; fifty-two great-grandchildren; and sixteen great great grandchildren.

Pastor Edward McKellar, age 43, passed on March 9, 2017.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 18, 2017, at First Salem Baptist Church, 191 Twin Church Road, Montezuma, Georgia, where Rev. Jeffrey Randle is pastor. The Rev. Hosie Waters, pastor of Magnolia Baptist Church, Montezuma, Georgia, will officiate. Burial will follow at the Davis Chapel Cemetery, Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Pastor  Edward McKellar was born on November 30, 1973  in Montezuma, Georgia to the late Barbara McKellar and Eddie Fudge and was reared by Eddie McKellar.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Terrance Fudge.  He was educated in the public school system of Macon County where attended the historic D.F. Douglas High School, Montezuma, Georgia. At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.   Pastor McKellar served faithfully as pastor for six years at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Andersonville, Georgia. He was employed with Barner’s Trucking Company and Department of Transportation. He was a dedicated member of the Masonic Herman Lodge #51.  Pastor McKellar met the former Shandra Freeman, and, on September 9, 2004, two hearts became one when they bonded in holy matrimony.
