Elzie Cephus Sr.

Mr. Elzie “Cee” Cephus Sr was born January 22, 1952, in Montezuma (Macon County), Georgia to the late Emma Lee Scofield Cephus and late Willie Davis Cephus. Mr. Elzie Cephus Sr. joined in holy matrimony to Linda Johnson Cephus on May 25, 1978. Linda preceded him in death.

Mr. Elzie Cephus age 70, departed his earthly life on Sunday October 30, 2022, at The Lodge, Warner Robins, Georgia. A precious one from us is gone; a voice we love is still. A place is vacant in our hearts that can never more be filled.

The funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. in the Sanctuary of First United Holiness Church, 324 Engram Street, Montezuma, Georgia. Elder Michael Coley will officiate. Interment will follow at Champ Waters Cemetery, 191 Twin Church Road, Montezuma, Georgia.

Graveside services, including burials, are likely to be held on ground that is uneven, which is out of the control of Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc. We ask that you take this into consideration when choosing footwear, such as shoes with high, thin heels. He attended DF Douglass School and worked for The Department of Labor and ADT Systems. He loved fishing and was a quiet man. He was known for his sense of humor, he loved to make his family laugh. Elzie loved his family and will be greatly missed. 

Elzie continues to live thorough the life of his five loving children, Zelda (Nathaniel Jr.) Ashmon, Byron, Georgia, Elzie Cephus Jr., Travis (Romona) Cephus both of McDonough, Georgia, Lorenze’ Cephus, Newnan, Georgia, Pamela Allen (Maurice Carnell), Villa Rica, Georgia. 

Elzie’s grandchildren: Jasmine Allen, Zariyah Ashmon, Nathaniel Ashmon III, Noah Ashmon; Jaylen Cephus, Carter Cephus, Cali Cephus: Camiyah Cephus, Taylor Coley, Adriel Cephus, and DaJon Cephus. Siblings: Willie Mae Cephus, Greensboro, North Carolina; Mary Emma Davis and Cora Cephus, both of Montezuma, Georgia; Jimmy (Hazel) Cephus and Joseph Cephus, both of Montezuma, Georgia; and Calvin Cephus (Anginette) Cephus of Perry, Georgia; special nephew that was reared as brother Sammie (Tomecca) Cephus, Oglethorpe, Georgia. Brothers in law; Trent (Wanda) Johnson, Peoria, Illnois, Arthur (Aleen) Johnson, Warner Robins, Georgia; Thomas Haugabrook, Montezuma, Georgia; John E. (Tolley) Haugabook, Fort Myers, Florida; Sisters in law; Vanessa Johnson, Perry, Georgia; Bridgette (Paul) Johnson, Macon, Georgia; one aunt Janie Scofield, Montezuma, Georgia; 4 uncles, Walter B. Scofield (Artie); Jerry (Emma) Scofield, Warner Robins, Georgia; Johnny (Darlene) Scofield, Reno Nevada; Billy Scofield, Pittsburgh, Pennyslvania.  A host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Emma Lee Scofield Cephus, father Willie Davis Cephus, and his brother Henry Cephus.

Mrs. Eloise "Lois" Spikes was born to the late Louise Frederick and the late Samuel Callaway in Perry, Georgia. She acquired her education from the Burdett School of Business in Boston, MA (high honors) and Macon County High School. She retired from Emory University Hospital after 31 years.

Lois knew no strangers. She opened her doors to many of her family members and friends and nourished them with food, love, kindness and endless stories. With strong determination and will, she faced each day with the strength of a bull and the memory of an elephant.

​May Alice Walker, known to many as “Peggy,” passed on October 15, 2022, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Americus, Georgia at the age of 79.

The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 110 Johnson Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia. Interment will follow in Felton Chapel Church Cemetery. Georgia Highway 128 North, Oglethorpe, Georgia.

May Alice Walker better known as Peggy was born January 8, 1943, to the late AC Walker and Lula McKellar Walker. She was preceded in death by six siblings, Jack Walker, Betty Louise Fulks, Wynell Walker, Joyce Felton, Mary Florence Hillmon and Robert Walker.

She was educated in the public school system of Macon County. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Felton Chapel Church and served faithfully.  She worked 25 years for Walker Cleaning Service of Atlanta, Georgia.

Peggy was a quiet lovely lady with a sweet personality.

She leaves to cherish her memories three sisters, Annie Mae Hill, Oglethorpe, Georgia, Minnie Walker, Atlanta, Georgia and Alice Nell Green (Carl), Oglethorpe, Georgia; four brothers, Arthur Frank Walker, Johnnie Walker both of Atlanta, Georgia, Charlie Walker, and Larry Walker both of Oglethorpe, Georgia; sister-in-law, Rosa Mae Walker, Atlanta, Georgia; brother-in-law Howard Felton, Montezuma, Georgia;  a host of nieces, nephews, two devoted nieces and caregiver, Beverly Faye Walker Evans, Oglethorpe, Georgia, and Yolanda Fulks, Atlanta, Georgia; four devoted friends, Bo Leggett, Wayne Mangram, Loretta Bradley and Mary King and other relatives.

Mary Francis Wilder Gilchrist was born to the late Henry Wilder and the late Elmer Gouch Wilder on July 1, 1942, in Oglethorpe, Macon County, Georgia. She was educated in the Macon County School System. At an early age she acquired her Christian Training in the local churches of Garden Valley Community. During her life in Hartford, Connecticut, she was employed as a dietician and retired in 1990. She moved back to Georgia to care for her mother and father. She also worked as a dietician at  Phoebe Sumter Hospital for several years.

She was united in holy matrimony to the late Charles Gilchrist. She was the beloved mother of four children, one daughter, Angeline Manson, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one sister Joyce Green Carson.

On Thursday, October 20, 2022, evening she was called from labor to reward in the surrounding of her beloved family. She leaves a legacy of love and many fond memories to the beloved children Anthony Manson, Byron, Georgia, Pattie Tuggle (Arthur), Atlanta, Georgia and Timothy Manson, Suffield, Connecticut; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a loving companion Eddie McKellar, Oglethorpe, Georgia; siblings  Mildred Wells (Robert) Oglethorpe, Georgia, Jeanette Fields, Perry, Georgia, Ethel Mae Bailey, Atlanta, Georgia and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The funeral service of Mrs. Zelma Lee Crumbley Holt, formerly of Buena Vista, Georgia, will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at Whole Truth International Ministries Inc., 502 South Lee Street, Americus, Georgia.  Burial will follow at Kingsville Memorial Cemetery, 102 Firetower Road, Cusseta, Georgia.

Mrs. Zelma Lee Crumbley Holt was born on November 1, 1951, to the parentage of the late Reverend Robert Lee Crumbley Sr. and Lula Maxie Paris Crumbley.  

Zel, as she was affectionately called, attended and graduated from Buena Vista High School in Buena Vista Georgia in 1969. At an early age, she joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Buena Vista, Georgia.  She later moved away to Tuscaloosa, Alabama where she attended various churches in that area.  Zel tuned in often to the Whole Truth International Ministries Inc and Whole Truth Women Book Study online.

Zel was a woman of faith and was very stern in her message, but everything was purely out of love. Her grandchildren, nieces and nephews knew her to mean what she say and say what she meant.  She was a jewel that will never be forgotten.  

On Tuesday, October 11, 2022, the Lord saw that Zel needed some rest, so he gently whispered come on home.  Well done thy good and faithful servant.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings: Leroy, Willie Edward, Mary Ann, Pearlene, Marvin, Helen and Samuel. She leaves many loving and fond memories to her devoted and beloved daughter, Cheryl (Ricky) Ellis, her grandchildren: Ricky Holt (fiancée Kerah) and Rashard Ellis all of Tuscaloosa Alabama; her only great-grandson Kameron Holt (as he called her his sweet thang) Tuscaloosa, Alabama; siblings: Ruby (James) Herron of Westerville, Ohio, Robert (Myrtice) Crumbley of Buena Vista Georgia, Essie (Johnny) Robinson of College Park, Georgia, Minister Maxine Crumbley of Greenville, South Carolina, Pasty (Robert) Ford, Buena Vista, Georgia William Crumbley and Minister Debra (Pastor George) Monts both of Americus, Georgia.  Sister-in-law Jennifer Crumbley Newnan, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that loved her unconditionally; including special friends: Joann Glass of Brooklyn, New York, Julie Taylor of Buena Vista, Georgia Patricia Peterson of Cusseta, Georgia; the Ellis family of Uniontown, Alabama and her extended families on Hwy 26 Buena Vista, Georgia

Billy was born November 27, 1961 Buena Vista, Georgia to George Porter Sr. and Mary Lizzie Sanford Porter. He was educated in the public school system of Marion County. He was self-employed. Billy was married to Saundra Walker Porter whereas his family was extended by six stepchildren: Larry Phillips, Tavaris Gray, Travis Gary, Jessica Saul, Jasmine Saul, Justice Walker.

Other survivors are his father Georgia Porter, Sr., Buena Vista, Georgia; siblings George Porter Jr. (Eva), Buena Vista, Georgia, Jerry Porter, Charleston, South Carolina, Brenda Stevens (Mike), Columbus, Georgia, Janice Reynolds, Buena Vista, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
