Mrs. Octavia “Muh” Waters, 92, passed away on March 28, 2016 at Tranquility Hospice at Kennesaw Mountain, in Marietta, Georgia.

A wake service will be held on Friday, April 1, 2016 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel Inc., 607 Kaigler Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Second Salem Baptist Church, Travelers Rest Road, Montezuma, Georgia, where Reverend D.C. Bell is pastor. Bishop H.E. Franklin of Word Alive Christian Center in Atlanta, GA will officiate. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.   

Octavia Waters was born May 6, 1923 in Montezuma, Georgia to the late Horace Adams and Ruth Green. At an early age she accepted Christ as her personal Savior.  She joined the band of Christian believers at Second Salem Baptist Church in Montezuma, GA under the leadership of Reverend K.T. Hayes. While at Second Salem, she served as secretary of Sunday School. She also served on the Usher Board and sang in the choir. In her later years, she attended Word Alive Christian Center in Atlanta, GA under the leadership of Bishop H.E. Franklin.

She was married to the late Mr. James Waters . She was preceded in death by 3 of her children, Ms. Ruth Ann Waters, Mr. William Crenshaw Adams, and Mr. Gary Waters.

Octavia was a homemaker. She will be remembered for her straightforwardness with a twinge of humor, her quick wit, and her passion for life. She was a mother to all who came into contact with her.

She is survived by her children, Mrs. Phyllistine Gardner (David of Kennesaw, GA, Willie J. Grier, Charlie Waters, Marquita Adams (Billy) all of Atlanta, GA and Ophelia Waters of Montezuma, Georgia; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; a sister, Dr. Phyllis Slaymon of North Carolina; two nieces, Octavia Pearsall (Micheal), North Carolina, Kathrina Simmons (Philip), Savannah, Georgia; a host of many cousins, relatives, friends to carry on her memory including Samuel Ortiz, Clearwater, Florida who was like a son; and three loving caregivers, Ms. Katrina Harris, Mrs. Priscilla Styles and Mrs. Tiffany Styles.

Hawaiian Sales, Jr. was born June 20, 1953 in Buena Vista, Marion County, Georgia to the late Hawaiian Sales, Sr. and the late Annie Christine Chapman Sales.  He was called from labor to reward on Good Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Americus, Sumter County, Georgia.
 
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Josh Gibson Family Center, Rogers Street, Buena Vista, Georgia.  The Reverend Joseph Brown, pastor of Evergreen Baptist Church, Mauk, Georgia, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Oliver Street, Buena Vista, Georgia.
 
Hawaiian, affectionately called "Bo Peep," acquired his education in the public school system of Marion County and his Christian training from Hall Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Hawaiian was a very smart young man. He was employed with Hagler’s Grocery Store of Buena Vista for several years.  He was later employed with Muckalee Creek Farm, Inc. as a machine operator.  Farming was a passion for Hawaiian.
 
“Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.  He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down; he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.” Born in a family of nine, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and three brothers.  He now joined those who has gone on before him.
 
Left with a legacy of love and many memories are his beloved children including Kelsey Sales, Columbus, Georgia, Jawaiian Sales, Buena Vista, Georgia, and Jessica Sales (Juan), Lawrenceville, Georgia; five grandchildren, Tyson, Kadin, Khloe, Kaitlyn and Kevin; five sisters, Bobbie McKinney, Annie Rose Walton, Crystal Gilder (Roosevelt), and Anita Wimbush (Elem), all of Buena Vista, Georgia, and Ozella Walton (Willie), Columbus, Georgia; one uncle, Kenneth Beckford, Greenville, South Carolina; a host of nieces and nephews including Hayward Walton, Jr. and Donnell Sales; and a host of beloved cousins and friends.

​Mrs. Gladys Oliver Coffee, age 85, 69 East Buena Vista Road, Ellaville, Georgia passed Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Americus, Georgia.
 
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 26, 2016 at New Corinth Baptist Church, Will Spivey Street, Ellaville, Georgia.  Interment will follow on March 30, 2016 at Pinelawn Memorial Park, 2030 Wellwood Avenue, Farmingdale, NY 11735.
 
Mrs. Gladys Oliver Coffee was born November 29, 1930 to the late Mae Oliver Atkinson.  Her grandparents, the late Charlie “Big Daddy” and Nella “Little Mama” Oliver, helped  rear her. One son, Norman Warren Coffee, preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by her devoted cousin who was reared as a brother, the late Sanders Golphin.  At an early age, she joined the band of Christian Believers at New Corinth Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend T. C. Cherry.  She acquired her Christian training at New Corinth Baptist Church Sunday School Ministry.  She was educated in the public school system of Schley County. She was a graduate of Savannah State University where she obtained a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education.   She was married to the late Norman W. Coffee.  To this union, two sons were born.
 
Around the age of 19, she moved to Liberty, New York. Shortly after marriage she moved to Queens, New York where was employed with New York Telephone Company as a telephone operator. While living in New York, she attended New York Calvary Baptist Church. She was employed with New York State Developmental Center where she worked various jobs as a Fire Marshall and then retired in 1994.
 
In 1996, she moved to her native land.  In 2006, she moved into her most recent site.
 
Survivors are one loving and devoted son, Gerry Coffee, Long Island, New York; two granddaughters, Kristen Coffee and Katherine Coffee; seven cousins who were reared as siblings, Lois Alridge, Buena Vista, Georgia, Edith Dowdell (Albert), Baltimore, Maryland, Agnes Sampson (Lee), Jersey City, New Jersey, Mildred Edge (Willie), Jersey City, New Jersey, Anne Oliver, Baltimore, Maryland, Betty Ann Harvey (Hollomon), Americus, Georgia, and Fred Oliver, Jr., Boston, Massachusetts; other relatives; caregiver, Julie Mae Smith, and friends.

Gracie Mae Sanders, age 58, passed on March 20, 2016 at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Americus, Georgia.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 201 Chatham Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia, Rev. Glenn Bryant, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Oglethorpe City Cemetery, Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Gracie was born October 5, 1957 to the  late Roosevelt Sanders, Sr. and Norvis Malcolm Sanders in  Simsboro, Louisiana.   She was educated in the public school system of Macon County and was a 1976 graduate of Macon County High School.  After graduation, she furthered her education on a full basketball scholarship  to Valdosta State University. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Oglethorpe, Georgia.   She is preceded in death by three siblings, Alfred Malcolm, Roosevelt Sanders, Jr. and Ernest Sanders. Gracie was known for her outgoing personality.

She leaves a legacy of loving and fond memories to her children, Courtney Sanders, Oglethorpe, Georgia, Nicholas Sanders, Norcross, Georgia, and Audrianna Sanders, Oglethorpe, Georgia; five beautiful grandchildren, Jaquavius Leary, Cournesia Sanders, Latavia Hill, Jakavion Hill, A’ lasia Sanders; four siblings, Wesley Jean Malcolm, Hampton, Georgia, Shirley S. Mrs. Dorothy Thomas Verrett, age 66, 117-A Fairway 2 Drive, Americus, Georgia passed Thursday, March 17, 2016 at the Phoebe Putney Hospital, Albany, Georgia.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Zion Hill Baptist Church, Allen Street, Leslie, Georgia.  Reverend James Hill, pastor, will officiate.

Dorothy Thomas Verrett was born in Leslie, Georgia June 19, 1949 to Clara Bell Hudson and the late Leroy Thomas, Sr.  She was a 1966 graduate of Union High School of Leslie, Georgia.  Growing up in the community of Leslie, Georgia, she acquired her Christian training at Zion Hill Baptist Church.  Dorothy enjoyed being with her grandchildren and playing Bingo.  On Thursday, March 17, 2016, Dorothy joined that great caravan of believers and loved ones and landed on yonders shore, which included her father, Reverend Leroy Thomas, Sr.; her beloved daughter, Sonya Barthell; her sister, Catherine Mercer; and her nephew she reared as a son, Kareem Thomas.​

Dorothy leaves a legacy of love and many fond memories to her beloved husband, children, grandchildren and family, which include a loving and devoted mother, Clara Bell Thomas, Leslie, Georgia; a beloved husband, Joseph Verrett, Americus, Georgia; her beloved children,  Valerie Carter and Rico Johnson Verett;  son-in-law, Willie Frank Mack, all of Americus,. Mrs. Melissa Lynetta Mann Harris, age 42 passed on Thursday, March 17,2016 at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany, Georgia.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Welcome Baptist Church, Middle River Road, Americus, Georgia. The Reverend Freddie Mann, Sr., pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Staley Memorial Gardens, corner of Souther Field Road and Mayo Street, Americus, Georgia. 

Melissa was born on  July 2, 1973 to Reverend Freddie Lee Mann Sr. and Hattie Bell Johnson Mann in Americus, Sumter County, Georgia. She was educated in the public school system of Sumter County and was a 1991 graduate of Sumter County Comprehensive High School in Americus, Georgia. Following graduation, she furthered her education at Albany Technical College in Albany, Georgia and received her degree in Nursing.

Melissa accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She was a member of Welcome Baptist Church in Americus, Georgia where she served on the Usher Ministry. During her Nursing Career she was employed by Dr. Marshall's office in Americus, Georgia and the Lillian Carter Health and Rehab in Plains, Georgia as a Licensed Practical Nurse.  She is preceded in death by her only sister, Clarisa Mann; an aunt, Mary Ann Mann; and an uncle Charlie Mann.

Melissa was joined in holy matrimony to Ron Harris, and to this union, three children were reared.

She leaves a legacy of love and fond memories to her loving husband, Ron Harris, Americus, Georgia; three devoted children Rev. Mireo Harris, Tommy Blakley, and Hardari Harris, all of Americus, Georgia; two adorable granddaughters Shaniya and Taliah Blakley; parents, Rev. Wynell Walker was born June 1, 1948 in Oglethorpe, Macon County, Georgia to the parentage of the late A.C. Walker and the late Lula Mae McKellar Walker. She was educated in the public school system of Macon County. She was a member of Felton Chapel Church. She worked as a homemaker. Three siblings, Jack Walker, Betty Fulks, and Nathan West, preceded her in death.

Mr. James Alexander Woods, age 76, passed on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, in Atlanta, Georgia.
 
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at St. Paul C.M.E. Church, GA Hwy 26 East, Buena Vista, Georgia. Reverend Andrew Thomas will officiate. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.
 
James Alexander Woods was born February 6, 1940 in Buena Vista, Georgia to the parentage of the late Mr. Alexander Woods and the late Ms. Mary Ferguson Woods. He was educated in the schools of Marion County, Georgia.
 
He confessed his hope of a living and Holy Savior and joined the band of Christian believers at Saint Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
 
Being an obedient child of God, James served in many facets of life. First, James worked on his father’s farm, which provided him with a firm foundation of work ethics and values. Secondly, James enlisted in the United States Army and served his country with honor and valor. He received his honorable discharge. James was employed by General Motors until his retirement.
 
Mr. James Alexander Woods departed this busy life on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, after a brief illness. He will be sadly missed by his loving family, church members and friends.
 
Mr. James Alexander Woods is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Mr. Chester Woods; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Eleanor Russell-Woods; and one beloved niece, Ms. Eleanor “Peanut” Irving.

​Mrs. Minnie Lee Jones Hix, age 74, passed on March  2, 2016 at her residence in Queens, New York.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 8, 2016, Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel Inc., 607 Kaigler Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia. The Reverend Paul Dunbar will officiate. Burial will follow at the Oglethorpe City Cemetery, Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Minnie Lee Jones Hix was born May 1, 1941 in Oglethorpe, Georgia to the late Malachi and Dorothy Jones. At an early age she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined the band of Christian believers at St. Paul A.M.E. Church. She was educated in the public school system of Macon County and was a 1961 graduate of the historic D.F. Douglass High School in Montezuma, Georgia. Following graduation, Minnie moved to New York. It was there she met the love of her life Emmitt Hix. On Dec 18, 1961, Emmitt and Minnie were joined in holy matrimony, and to this union their only child, Maxie Regina Hix, was born.

While living in Brooklyn, New York, Minnie joined Berean Baptist Church, where she was a faithful and dedicated member.  She enjoyed traveling and spending time in both New York and her native home in Georgia.  Minnie had a very caring and given heart, as she was known as a mother figure to many. She is preceded in death by her only sister, Betty Jean  Jones.

Emily Davis Moye

Mrs. Emily Davis Moye, age 62, 158-11 111th Avenue, Jamaica, New York passed February 28, 2016 at the Long Island Jewish Hospital.  

The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc., 607 Kaigler St., Oglethorpe, Georgia.  The Reverend Coley  Clark, Jr., pastor of Zion Grove Baptist Church, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the New Home Baptist Church Cemetery, Butler Mill Road, Reynolds, Macon County, Georgia.
 
Emily was born November 4, 1953 in Macon County, Georgia to the late Emily Miller Davis and Claudie Davis, Jr. She was educated in the public school system of Macon County where she was a graduate of the historic D. F. Douglass High School.   She was employed as a C.N.A. worker under the Mentally Disabled AABR District Council.  She was a member of the Local Union No. 840.  Emily Moye joined the organizing Department of District Council 1707, AFSCME in 2001.  She quickly demonstrated the skills she learned with the Teamsters by how quickly she earned promotions to the Staff Organizer then to the Field Service Representative.  She was later promoted Director of Home Care where she served until her retirement in 2012.
 
She also served on the board of the Home Care Employees Local 389 Health Care and Pension Fund where she dedicated her career to modernization.  She was highly respected by both management and union board members.  Her dedication to her members will always be fondly remembered.
 
Emily was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Charles Lester Moye Sr. and to this union they were blessed with one son, Lester. 

She leaves to mourn her passing a beloved son, Charles Lester Moye, Jr., Jamaica, New York; three siblings, Estella Davis Kazinazruf, Gloria Davis Powell, and Gladys Davis, all of Oglethorpe, Georgia, and Ernest  (Lucretia) Davis, Conyers, Georgia; mother-in-law, Charity Best Hardy, Milledgeville, New York; step-mother-in-law, Ola B. Moye, North Carolina; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jimmie (Bonetta) King, Virginia, Tommy (Ellen) Moye, Ayden, North Carolina, Johnny L.
