Hattie Minter Jones

Hattie Minter Jones, age 88, passed Friday, May 20, 2016 at Saint Francis Hospital, Columbus, Georgia. 

The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 110 South McDuffie Street, Buena Vista, Georgia. Reverend Gregg Porter, pastor, will officiate.   Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Oliver Street, Buena Vista, Georgia.
 
Hattie was born to the late Mr. Robert Roy Minter and the late Allie Bess Majors Minter on the 19th of February, 1928 in the city of Buena Vista, Marion County, Georgia.  She acquired her education in the public school system of Marion County and received her high school diploma in 1945.  Early in life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined the band of Christian believers at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she became a very dedicated member in all facets of the church she loved so very well.  She served in various ministries and organizations which include the following: pianist, choir director, Missionary Board Ministry, Mother’s Board, Mother of the Church, Youth Director, Deaconess Board,  and Sunday School Teacher.  On the level of education she was an organizer for the local and state Baptist Association. 
 
Her community involvement included Yuletide Chapter No. 383 Order Of Eastern Star,  where she became a Golden Card  Holder and Life Time Member.  She was an official member of the Top Twenty Organization.
 
She was a graduate of the former Fort Valley State College of Ft. Valley, Georgia where she obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education 1951.  She taught in the rural school system of Marion County and later in Buena Vista High School, Buena Vista, Georgia, and in her later years she taught at Marion County High School. After 32 years, she retired in 1978.  She was the first black teacher who taught in the combined segregated school located  on College Street (what is now known as Roger Street).
 
Hattie’s life was filled with love and affection by her parents, siblings, husband, daughter and the students she touched along her life: parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Roy Minter and Allie Bess Majors Minter; her siblings, the late Georgia H. McBride, Robert Minter, William H. Minter, and Katie Purnel.  She was also preceded in death in 1991 by her beloved husband who she married in 1945, Mr.Lonzo Jones, and her precious beloved daughter, Deborah Jones Rhine, who passed away August 12, 2015.
 
Survivors are sister-in-law, Susie Minter, Columbus, Georgia; nephews and nieces, Alfonzo (Deloris) Minter, Clayton, North Carolina, Patricia (Norwood) Crosby, Morrisville, North Carolina, Sharon Minter, Woodbridge, Virginia, Leslie Minter, Columbus, Georgia, a special niece who cared and nurtured her, Barbara (George) Tullis, Buena Vista, Georgia, Bobby (Carolyn) Wright, Forston, Georgia, Wanda (Charlie) Jones, Buena Vista, Georgia, Sherol (Charles) Harvey, and Freddie Carter, all of Buena Vista, Georgia; a host of beloved great nieces and great nephews; other relatives, including Catherine Fudge; and a host of beloved friends including a very devoted friend, Mrs. Helen McMurray and Mt. Zion Baptist Church Family.

John W. Solomon, age 82, of Macon County passed on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Houston County Medical Center.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc., 607 Kaigler Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia. Family hour will be held one hour before the service. 

John W. Solomon, also known as “Goodman,” was born in Perry, Ga on March 25, 1934 to the late Leo Solomon and the late Noni Woolfork. He acquired an education in the public school system of Macon County. John was united in Holy matrimony to the late Annie J. Terry on February 20, 1970. He rededicated his life to Christ in 2005. He enjoyed listening to music, playing checker and cards, watching TV and spending time with family and friends.

John worked as a farmer, truck driver, and an entrepreneur.  He owned and managed several stores and clubs. He spent part of his life in Bronx, New York, where he was a building superintendent. John was a hard working man with a good mind for business. He was never afraid to take a risk.

John had two sisters and 2 brothers. He is survived by his older sister, Tralis Rumph of Marshallville, Ga and younger brother, Wayne Sneed of Overland Park, Kansas. His other two siblings, R.T Taylor and Betty Rumph preceded him in death. John had 14 children, Delores Moore-Solomon, Willie John Solomon (deceased), Francine Solomon (deceased), Kenneth B. Solomon (deceased), Denise Hachett, Kevin Hachett, John W. Solomon, Jr., Gregory Malloy (Patricia), Roxy A. Solomon, LaGena  N. Solomon, John W. Solomon, Jr., and Charlene Ferguson (Bobby). His grandchildren include Jernard Moore, Towana Solomon-Haney, Willie Jackson-Solomon, Tara Davis, Dominque Davis, Kenneth Davis, Shana Solomon, Jacqulyn Solomon-Scullark, Lucretia Sharlene Solomon-Horton, Jaquetta Fuller, Shandell Roscoe, Sharees Hachett, Angerina Hachett, Kenya Hachett, Kevin Hachett, Kiana Hachett, Katrell Hachett, Kevon Hachett, Carissa Solomon, Teresa Solomon, Courtney Lester, Tayuana McGhee, Breyuana McGhee, Jonaisha Solomon, John W. Solomon II, Jordin Solomon, Charity Ferguson, and Bobby J. Ferguson, Jr. John also has 28 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Charlie Waters, age 50, passed on May 10, 2016 at the Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Second Salem Baptist Church, Travelers Rest Road, Montezuma, Georgia, where Reverend D.C. Bell is Pastor. Pastor James Rolle, associate pastor of Word Alive Christian Center in Atlanta, Georgia will officiate. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.   

Charlie Waters was born on May 26, 1965 to the late James Waters and Octavia Adams Waters in Montezuma, Georgia. He is preceded in death by three siblings, Ruth Ann Waters, William Crenshaw Adams, and Gary Waters. He attended the public school system of Macon County and was 1983 graduate of the Historic D.F. Douglass High school in Montezuma, Georgia. At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized at Second Salem Baptist Church in Montezuma, Georgia. While living in the Atlanta, Georgia area he enjoyed attending services at Word Alive Christian Center in Atlanta, Georgia. For many years he worked as a Construction Worker. 

He is survived by one daughter, Taylor McKenzie, Chicago, Illinois; four siblings, Willie J. Grier, of Atlanta, Georgia, Ophelia Waters of Montezuma, Georgia, Marquita Adams (Billy) of Atlanta, GA and Phyllistine Gardner (David) of Kennesaw, Georgia; aunt, Dr. Phyllis Slaymon of North Carolina; a loving companion, Sylvia Beauregard; and  a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends to carry on his memory.

​Alfred Cranna Bromfield, Jr. age 49 passed on May 10, 2016 at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia.

A wake service will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at the Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, 607 Kaigler Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia.

The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2016, at Eastview Cemetery, Ashby Street, Americus, Georgia. The Reverend Jeff Wallace, Rector of the Calvary Episcopal Church, in Americus, Georgia, will officiate.

Alfred Cranna Bromfield, Jr. was born May 22, 1967 in Miami, Dade County, Florida to Cosetella Williams Bromfield and the late Alfred Cranna Bromfield, Sr. He acquired his education at Miami Edison High School in 1984. He was a member of the Miami-Edison High School Red Raiders Marching Band. Alfred joined the Episcopal Church of Incarnation of Miami, Florida. While serving as a member, he took part in the Episcopal EYC and Church  Choir. He was a great supporter of every facet of the church including Sunday School where he received several awards. Following high school, he furthered his skills and knowledge an obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Instrumental Music with a Saxophone concentration and an Education Certification from the Georgia Southwestern University in Americus, Georgia.  During his tenure at Georgia Southwestern State University, he was a member of GSW Marching Band he became the Lead Tenor Saxophonist. While living in Georgia, he attended the Catholic Episcopal Church of Americus, Georgia. He played for several churches in the surrounding communities, and he taught music. His interests were teaching, composing, and, through music, sharing his learning experience with students.

He was a member of the Sunshine Jazz Organization of South Florida Incorporated,  the Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity, where he held positions as the Secretary/Historian in 1990 and  two terms as Vice-President 1991. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated where he held the position of Historian in 1992. He was the Pianist and Treasurer of The Hallelujah Fellowship Mass Choir, Ellaville, Georgia.  He was the Founder and instructor or AL’s Music Works, Ellaville, Georgia and a Member of Music Educators National Conference.

He is survived by his two daughters Zandra R. Broomfield and Teanna C. Bromfield; his mother, Costell W. Bromfield, Ellaville, Georgia; aunts, Idella Smith, Oglethorpe, Georgia, Lorene Quillian, Atlanta, Georgia, Ola Mae Williams, Annie L. Williams, Lovie Williams  of Americus, Georgia; a host of cousins and friends, including  Joann Waymon and Mark Clark,  and Mary Akins.

Mrs. Leila Virginia McDougald Hubbard, age 74, 128 MLK Drive, Buena Vista, Georgia passed Friday, May 6, 2016 at her home.

The funeral service will be conducted 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Nazarene Church of God in Christ, 2286 Pineville Road, Buena Vista, Georgia. Elder Larry Franklin, Jr., pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Mount Zion A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Oliver Street, Buena Vista, Georgia.

Mrs. Virginia was born March 1, 1942 in Butler, Taylor County, Georgia to the late Lofton McDougald and Margaret Davis. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Davis and Moses McDougald; a sister, Jewel McDougald; and aunts and uncle, Mattie Walker, Mary Hall, Charlie Walker.  Virginia attended the public school system of Marion County. She was a 1961 graduate of Buena Vista High School. She acquired her Christian from Hall Chapel C.M.E Church. She was a member of the Golden Stars Gospel Group of Buena Vista, Georgia. She was married to the late Lester Hubbard, and to this union three children were born.

She leaves much love, fond memories, and a legacy that will always remain in the heart of those who survive: three sons, Gary Hubbard, Darrell Hubbard (Ann) and Bobby Hubbard, all of Buena Vista, Georgia; granddaughter, Kiara Bridges Columbus, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Mozelle Wingate, Judy Shade, Deloris Mccullough, Oneal Rhinehardt, and Lorie Correla; brothers-in-law, Garland (Butch) Rhinehardt and Johnny Rhinehardt; a host of nieces and nephews, including Elaine Pough (Clifford Jr.), Tazewell, Georgia, Bobby Bradford (Monique) Lawrenceville, Georgia, Tony Davis (Sakeenah) Atlanta, Georgia, Devon Davis, Buena Vista, Georgia; great nieces and great nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends including Bertha Royal, Linda White, Emma Ruth Dixon Gwen Crawford.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 7, 2016 at New St. Paul Baptist Church, Packing House Road, Americus, Georgia. Reverend Walker, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Eastview Cemetery.

Dianne  was born on June 16, 1963 in Americus, Sumter County, Georgia to Deloris Chambliss and Charles Copper. She was preceded in death by her aunt, Mattie Pearl Clark, and uncle, James Authur Chamliss.  She was educated in the public school system of Sumter County where she completed the eleventh grade at South East High School. She was a Cook at Chevron Food Mart on U.S. 19 Americus, Georgia. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior and join the band of Christian Believers at New Saint Paul Baptist Church in Americus, Georgia. She was joined in holy matrimony to Gene Myers Sr. and to this union four children were born .

Larry Perkins, age 61, passed on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia.

The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the Union Baptist Church, Norris Street, Montezuma, Georgia, where Reverend Joe Hairston is pastor. Reverend David Thomas, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Davis Chapel A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Georgia, Hwy 26 East, Oglethorpe, Georgia. 

Larry was born August 31, 1954 in Ideal, Macon County, Georgia to Ida Lee Perkins and the late Issac Byse.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Holmes Sanders.  He was a 1971 graduate of D. F. Douglass High School, Montezuma, Georgia.   Also, he was a veteran of the United States Navy.   At an early age he joined the Union Baptist Church of Montezuma, Georgia.

He married his one and only love, Ernestine Harris Perkins.  To this union they were blessed with two children.

In 2005 he retired from Torrey Homes after many years of dedicated services as a carpenter. After retiring, he continued to work on various jobs, keeping himself busy especially talking and giving advice. He was showered with love and affection by his beloved grandparents, the late Frank Perkins and Ocilla Fulks Perkins Hunter, who went on before him.

Mildred was born October 25, 1970 to Mary Swanson Terry and Robert Lee Terry, Sr. in Marion County, Georgia. She was educated in the public school system of Marion County. She was a seamstress at the Manhattan Shirt Company of Americus, Georgia. She was preceded in death by two siblings, Mitchell Terry and Alfred Terry.
 
She is survived by three children, Janae Xaviera Terry, Zanna Raejeen Terry, and Makayla Julia Terry; five siblings, Joyce Franklin (Jessie), Buena Vista, Georgia, Teddy Swanson (Sherill), Buena Vista, Georgia, Mattie Terry, Panama City, Florida, Patricia Terry, Buena Vista, Georgia, Robert Lee Terry, Jr. (Lizzie), Columbus, Georgia; aunts and uncles, Rosie Terry, Buena Vista, Georgia, David Swanson (Luther Mae), Ellaville, Georgia, Minnie Swanson, Ellaville, Georgia, Bessie Brown, Mernasha, Virginia, Ernest James Rogers, Sylva Swanson, Americus, Georgia; a host of nieces and nephews, including a devoted niece, Leah Wells, Buena Vista, Georgia and a devoted nephew, Jayden Terry.

Ernest Lee Hudson, age 69, of Detroit, Michigan passed April 19, 2016 at the Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan.   

The funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Monday morning, May 2, 2016 at the Shade Arnold Baptist Church, GA Highway 26, Montezuma, Georgia.  Interment will follow at 12:00 Noon at the Andersonville National Cemetery Rostrum, Andersonville, Georgia with military honors.  

 
Ernest Lee Hudson was born to Lula Pearl Tookes Hudson and the late Oliver Hudson.   He was a graduate of D. F. Douglass High School and was honorably discharged from U. S Army. He was married to the late Elouise Thomas Hudson and was blessed with three children, Romarian, Terrance and  Tyisha  Hudson; mother, Lula Pearl Hudson, Oglethorpe, Georgia;  seven siblings and their spouses,   Durel (Betty) Hudson,  Oliver (Florine) Hudson,  Henry Joe  (Ann) Hudson, Willie I. (Estella) Hudson, Milton Hudson, Kenneth (Mamie) Hudson and Donald Hudson; two brothers and their spouses, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Thomas and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Thomas; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
 
The family will leave from the home of Mrs. Lula Pearl Hudson, Mill St., Oglethorpe, Georgia.
