Deacon Dan Hollis, age 73, 3579 U.S. Highway 19 South, Ellaville, Georgia, passed on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1908 Dozier Road, Ellaville, Georgia. Rev. William Laster, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Church cemetery.

Deacon Dan Hollis was born to the late Tucker Hollis and Amzie Tookes Hollis on March 29, 1937 in Ellaville, Schley County, Georgia. He was educated in the Schley County Public School system. Reared in a Christian home, Dan acknowledged the Lord early in life and kept to His word. He was a devoted member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church family and served faithfully on the Deacon Board.

Later on life’s journey, Dan met and married the love of his life, the former Vernice Collier. They declared their love and made vows before man and God to never part on May 9, 1959. Their union welcomed seven loving children. Dan was a hardworking man who usually worked two jobs to support his family whom he loved dearly. For a number of years, he was self-employed in the pulpwood cutting and hauling business. In addition, he worked for Stevens Peanut Warehouse during peanut season, as well as Carson Brothers Tractors in Americus. Before retiring in 2000, he was employed with the City of Ellaville.

On November 4, 2010, Dan was called to take his rest. He now joins those who were called before him - his parents; siblings, Charles Hollis, James Ferrell Hollis, Kenneth Hollis, Juanita Hollis Thompkins, and Clarence Hollis; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Renee Johnson Hollis; and nephew, Thomas Wayne Hollis. Left to cherish his precious memories are his devoted wife of 51 years, Vernice Collier Hollis, Ellaville, Georgia; his children, Nina Hollis Smith, Ellaville, Georgia, Randy Hollis (Pat), Americus, Georgia, Steve Hollis, Ellaville, Georgia, Becky Hollis DeLaney (Ben), Warner Robins, Georgia, Vanessa Hollis, Ellaville, Georgia, Ted Hollis, Sr. (Sandra), Americus, Georgia, and Kirk Hollis (Michelle), Albany, Georgia; thirteen grandchildren, Torell Barker (Arthtricia), Tameka Hollis, Bradley Johnson, Leticia Banks (Anthonio), Venus Hollis, Lee A. Edwards, Jr. (Falicia), Yashika Hollis, Tanisha Hollis, Melissa Hollis, Sandria Hollis, Ted Hollis, Jr., Cody Hollis, and Joy Hollis; twenty great  grandchildren; siblings, Mary Ellen Curry (Charlie), Atlanta, Georgia, Virginia Hollis, College Park, Georgia, and Lemar Hollis, Jonesboro, Georgia; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John Collier, Akron, Ohio, David Collier (Doris), Albany, Georgia, Geraldine Collier Drone (Alphonso), Akron, Ohio, Mattie Walker, Buena Vista, Georgia, Lacy Collier, Rockford, Illinois, Glazella Collier, Miami, Florida, and Laura Hollis, Racine Wisconsin; aunts and uncles, Jennie Hollis Harper, Columbus, Georgia, Annie Maude Hollis, Box Springs, Georgia, and William Hollis, Midland, Georgia; his nieces and nephews, including devoted niece and nephews, Ethel Hollis Campbell, Darryl Aldridge, and Anthony Hollis, all of Ellaville, Georgia, and Christopher Hollis, San Diego, California; a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Jewel McClendon Wakefield, age 92, 514 Kaigler Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia passed Monday, November 1, 2010 at Montezuma Health & Rehab Center, Montezuma, Georgia.

A wake service will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2010 from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc., 607 Kaigler Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Friday, November 5, 2010 at Saint Paul A.M.E. Church, 110 Johnson Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia.  Reverend Norris Harris, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Oglethorpe City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Oglethorpe, Georgia.  

Mrs. Jewel McClendon Wakefield was born October 12, 1918 in Oglethorpe, Macon County, Georgia to the late A. C. McClendon and Alice Smith.  Two siblings preceded her in death, A. C. "Bubba" McClendon, Jr. and Rose McClendon Respress.  She was educated in Macon County Public School System where she attended the Rosenwald School in Oglethorpe, Georgia and graduated from Macon County Training High School in Montezuma, Georgia.  She moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she obtained her degree in Cosmetology from Nickerson Beauty School.  At an early age, she joined the Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, under the leadership of Rev. J. E. Jackson, where she served as President of the Usher Board Ministry, member of the Women's Missionary Board and Stewardess Board.

She was united in Holy matrimony to the late Rev. T. R. Wakefield, Sr.  To this union, she was blessed with eleven step-children, three preceded her in death, Vera Gardner (James),Samuel Wakefield and Willie Wakefield (Marilyn).

Jewel was dedicated to her niece and great nephews; Debra and children.  She loved her as a daughter.  Survivors are Debra Thomas, Oglethorpe, Georgia, Leon Thomas, III, Houston, Texas, Jermaine Thomas, Brandon Thomas, both of Oglethorpe, Georgia and Lakeisha Thomas, Hampton, Virginia; great great nieces, Shaniya Thomas and Makayla Kaigler; seven step children, Thomas Wakefield, Naomi Thomas (Bennie), all of Americus, Georgia, Mary Minion, T. R. Wakefield, Jr., both of Plains, Georgia, Herman Wakefield (Bobbie), Oakland, California, Daisy B. King and Franklin Wakefield (Roxie), all of Jacksonville, Florida; step daughter-in-law, Dorothy Wakefield, Jacksonville, Florida; stepsister, Ruth Bray, Chicago, Illinois; Nephew, Walter Bridges (Priscilla), Atlanta, Georgia; other great nephews, Torry McClendon (Latrise), Atlanta, Georgia, Ronald Tramell McClendon, Montezuma, Georgia and Kelvin Harris, Oglethorpe, Georgia; a cousin, Ella Frances Williams, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a host of step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
