A wake service will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2010 from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc., 607 Kaigler Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Friday, November 5, 2010 at Saint Paul A.M.E. Church, 110 Johnson Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia. Reverend Norris Harris, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Oglethorpe City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Oglethorpe, Georgia.
Mrs. Jewel McClendon Wakefield was born October 12, 1918 in Oglethorpe, Macon County, Georgia to the late A. C. McClendon and Alice Smith. Two siblings preceded her in death, A. C. "Bubba" McClendon, Jr. and Rose McClendon Respress. She was educated in Macon County Public School System where she attended the Rosenwald School in Oglethorpe, Georgia and graduated from Macon County Training High School in Montezuma, Georgia. She moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she obtained her degree in Cosmetology from Nickerson Beauty School. At an early age, she joined the Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, under the leadership of Rev. J. E. Jackson, where she served as President of the Usher Board Ministry, member of the Women's Missionary Board and Stewardess Board.
She was united in Holy matrimony to the late Rev. T. R. Wakefield, Sr. To this union, she was blessed with eleven step-children, three preceded her in death, Vera Gardner (James),Samuel Wakefield and Willie Wakefield (Marilyn).
Jewel was dedicated to her niece and great nephews; Debra and children. She loved her as a daughter. Survivors are Debra Thomas, Oglethorpe, Georgia, Leon Thomas, III, Houston, Texas, Jermaine Thomas, Brandon Thomas, both of Oglethorpe, Georgia and Lakeisha Thomas, Hampton, Virginia; great great nieces, Shaniya Thomas and Makayla Kaigler; seven step children, Thomas Wakefield, Naomi Thomas (Bennie), all of Americus, Georgia, Mary Minion, T. R. Wakefield, Jr., both of Plains, Georgia, Herman Wakefield (Bobbie), Oakland, California, Daisy B. King and Franklin Wakefield (Roxie), all of Jacksonville, Florida; step daughter-in-law, Dorothy Wakefield, Jacksonville, Florida; stepsister, Ruth Bray, Chicago, Illinois; Nephew, Walter Bridges (Priscilla), Atlanta, Georgia; other great nephews, Torry McClendon (Latrise), Atlanta, Georgia, Ronald Tramell McClendon, Montezuma, Georgia and Kelvin Harris, Oglethorpe, Georgia; a cousin, Ella Frances Williams, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a host of step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Jewel was a "Princess" to me. I told her so everytime I saw her. She was a distant cousin whom I love dearly- beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. I just saw her last month on my visit home. God blessed us all with knowing her and having the opportunity to love her.
