Minerva Worthy Greene

Mrs. Minerva Elizabeth Worthy Greene, age 83, 437 North Plum Street, Montezuma, Georgia passed Monday, February 6, 2012.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the Magnolia Baptist Church, 415 Hosie Waters Street, Montezuma, Georgia. Interment followed in the Second Salem Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Minerva Elizabeth Worthy Greene was born December 12, 1928 to the late Mrs. Mary Lizzy Miller Worthy and Jessie Worthy, Sr. in Macon County, Georgia. She was married to the late Deacon Jesse Greene, Sr. for forty-eight years, and to that union, they were blessed with two sons: Jesse Greene, Jr., West Palm Beach, Florida and Walter Greene (Earlene), Fairfield, Alabama. She was blessed with seven grandchildren, one of whom she reared as her son, Walter Felton, Atlanta, Georgia, and nine great grandchildren. In 1949, Sister Greene became employed with Southern Frozen, Inc. and after thirty-one years of dedicated services, she retired as a grader and line technician.

At the tender age of nine, she joined the Zion Hill Baptist Church, under the care and leadership of the late Reverend Daniel Thomas of Americus, Georgia. Sister Greene was a faithful servant at the Zion Hill Baptist Church and worked untiringly on every facet of the Church ministries. In 1948 she was united in holy matrimony to her one and only love, Deacon Jesse Greene, Sr. and in 1950 she moved her membership to Second Salem Baptist of Montezuma, Georgia under the leadership of the late Reverend Champ Waters. She served in several auxiliaries that include president of the choir, church announcer and president of the missionary ministry. After the death of her husband, she returned to Zion Hill in March 2001 under the leadership of Reverend James Curtis Iverson. In 2006, she served as the Acting Mother of Zion Hill Baptist Church. Later she returned and renewed her membership with Second Salem Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend Leon Pace and she was appointed Mother of Second Salem Baptist Church where she remained until her demise.

Sister Minerva Elizabeth Worthy Greene enjoyed life with eight brothers and three sisters, three of which preceded her in death, Willie James Worthy, Jessie Worthy, Jr., and Elizah Worthy.

Other Survivors include five loving brothers, and their spouses, Bradie Worthy (Iris), Milford, Delaware, Robert Worthy (Edgarmae) West Palm Beach, Florida, Charles Worthy Bridgeville, Delaware, Eddie Worthy (Robin), Greenwood, Delaware, and Emmitt Worthy, Sr. (Marilyn), Montezuma, Georgia; three sisters, Margaret Worthy-Stalk, San Francisco, California, Rose Worthy-Johnson, San Monica, California and Mary Helen Worthy-Jackson, Montezuma, Georgia; sister-in-law, Joan Worthy, Belglade, Florida; uncle, Robert Miller; a host of nieces and nephews including Vanessa Johnson, San Monica, California, Melissa Worthy, Georgetown, Delaware; and Debbie Jackson-Walker (Roy), Oglethorpe, Georgia; godchildren, Delphane Solomon, Ellaville, Georgia, Rev. Dr. Adrienne Beach-Duncan, Lillie Pearl Jackson, and Reverend Alfred Wynn all of Montezuma, Georgia; a host of other relatives and friends including three devoted, Liza B. Sanders, Connie Walker and Annie Lou Smith all of Montezuma, Georgia.

    I like to believe that when we lose someone close to us they still live through us. My heart goes out to the Greene & Worthy Families. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
