    “My Phiphine”

I grew up in Oochee bottom a half-mile from Josephine Holt. My Mom and Dad had moved back to Buena Vista from Atlanta to raise my brother and me because they wanted us to grow up in a rural environment.
I was fortunate to have known Josephine throughout various stages of my life.

When I was a youngster, Josephine helped raise my brother and me, and she became my “Phiphine” . My Phiphine would baby sit us every day during the week and walk the half-mile home in the afternoons. I sometimes would get “put out” with my Mom and tell her I was “Going to my Phiphine’s and never coming back” and would make the same trip down the road to visit her at her house. Mom would then come and get me after half a day or so and we would begin the entire cycle over again.

When I was a teenager, Phiphine would come to our house to help my Mom with laundry and such. Phiphine taught me how to properly iron, and I think about her every time I iron a shirt. (And my wife thanks her every time she doesn't have to iron for me.)
Occasionally, I would have some of my friends over prior to a night out on the town. In preparation for the evening I would walk around the house half- naked in my underwear or less looking for a favorite shirt or jeans, all the while Phiphine would be ironing. My friends would look at me oddly in disbelief that I was cavorting around the house in front of her in such fashion. I told them“Phiphine has seen it all and has changed more diapers on me than my Mom”.

Several years ago, my grandmother developed a terminal illness that eventually required constant care. This care was lovingly provided to her by Phiphine and her sister, Ardella. I cannot think of anyone I would rather have provided her care than my Phiphine.

After moving to Chattanooga, and only visiting Buena Vista from time to time, my visits with Phiphine became infrequent. But precious memories of my Phiphine will last forever.
    I loved my “Phiphine”.
