Evangelist John Henry Barber, age 69 of 1099 Vandyke Apt, 306 Detroit, Michigan passed Tuesday, November 13, 2012.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 1, 2012 at First Salem Baptist Church, 191 Twin Church Road, Montezuma, Georgia. Interment will follow in Oglethorpe City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Elder John Barber was born August 31, 1943, in Montezuma Georgia to the late Alvin Barber and Mother Annie Bell Barber. When John was born, he had a ‘veil’ over his face, at that moment his mother knew that he would be an extraordinary child and that God would use him mightily.

At the age of seven, his parents relocated to Detroit, Michigan. John completed his education and graduated from Northwestern High School. At the age of 17, he became a member of the Latter Day Church under the leadership of Pastor Creer. After accepting the Lord as his personal Savior, he was baptized. A year later, John accepted the call to Evangelize, birthing out the Gospel of Peace Ministry. During a summer revival in Columbus, Ohio, he met Marilyn Smalls.

On December 1, 1973, John and Marilyn were united in holy matrimony. To that union, two children were born: Jelani and Ashanti Denise. Marriage and family didn’t stop Evangelist Barber from preaching the Gospel. He continued to travel over the next two decades, preaching from the north to the south and throughout the Midwest touching many lives. Because he shared the Gospel of Peace, he was loved by many. Evangelist Barber fought a good fight, kept the faith, and finished his course. He made his peaceful transition on Saturday, November 17, 2012.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Marilyn (38 years), two beautiful children, Jelani and Ashanti Denise, mother-in-law Sister Evelyn Smalls, four brothers and five sisters Willie Albert Haugabook, Montezuma, Susie Lee Hunter, Detroit, MI, Daisy Mae Jewell, Detroit, MI, Bosie Lee Barber, Montezuma, GA, Lillie Bell Oglesby (Gus), Detroit, MI, Emma Mae Cobb, Wayne, MI, J. Harvey Barber (Irene) Ecorse, MI, Robert Lee Barber, Ecorse, MI, Claudia Mae Fox, Southfield, MI, three siblings that preceded him in death, Atlou, Richard and Joseph.

He also leaves to cherish four brothers-in-law: Romero Simmons (Barbara), Edisto Island, SC, Willie Smalls, Columbus, OH, Kenneth Smalls (Cynthia) Columbus, OH, Tyrone Smalls, Columbus, OH. Five sisters-in-law: Carolyn Conley (Edward) Memphis, TN, Juanita Smalls, Columbus, OH, Jeanette Rodgers (David), Southfield, MI, Kathy Pack, Columbus, OH, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and friends will also cherish his memories.

I have prayed for Rev Barber ever since I heard him preach one of the more inspiring messages I had ever heard when he and I both were visiting a small radio station church in Keavy near Corbin Ky. I thought I was fired up in the Lord, but he fired me up even MORE! What a blessing it was to have heard him preach. I have hoped to have met him again over these many years(almost 30 years ago now) ..I wish i could get copies of some of his sermons/teachings. If there is anyway possible please write to me at the email given.

Elder Barber was the first of a real minister I met doing the work of Jesus Christ as he did. He and his wife Marilyn. I have been looking for them for years. Elder Barber prophesized that Baltimore City was the bloody city and truly today so many years later it is! He did the work of the Lord and I believe without compromise. I bless the Lord for having know him. Marilyn be blessed.
