Elder John Barber was born August 31, 1943, in Montezuma Georgia to the late Alvin Barber and Mother Annie Bell Barber. When John was born, he had a ‘veil’ over his face, at that moment his mother knew that he would be an extraordinary child and that God would use him mightily.
At the age of seven, his parents relocated to Detroit, Michigan. John completed his education and graduated from Northwestern High School. At the age of 17, he became a member of the Latter Day Church under the leadership of Pastor Creer. After accepting the Lord as his personal Savior, he was baptized. A year later, John accepted the call to Evangelize, birthing out the Gospel of Peace Ministry. During a summer revival in Columbus, Ohio, he met Marilyn Smalls.
On December 1, 1973, John and Marilyn were united in holy matrimony. To that union, two children were born: Jelani and Ashanti Denise. Marriage and family didn’t stop Evangelist Barber from preaching the Gospel. He continued to travel over the next two decades, preaching from the north to the south and throughout the Midwest touching many lives. Because he shared the Gospel of Peace, he was loved by many. Evangelist Barber fought a good fight, kept the faith, and finished his course. He made his peaceful transition on Saturday, November 17, 2012.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Marilyn (38 years), two beautiful children, Jelani and Ashanti Denise, mother-in-law Sister Evelyn Smalls, four brothers and five sisters Willie Albert Haugabook, Montezuma, Susie Lee Hunter, Detroit, MI, Daisy Mae Jewell, Detroit, MI, Bosie Lee Barber, Montezuma, GA, Lillie Bell Oglesby (Gus), Detroit, MI, Emma Mae Cobb, Wayne, MI, J.
