
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday morning, 11:00 A.M. April 16, 2022, at the Mount Olive Baptist Church, Moody Road, Tazewell, Georgia. The Reverend Joe Oglesby, pastor will officiate. Masks are required in the sanctuary. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Please be mindful that we will adhere to all government recommendations and mandates at all services at this time. We are limiting graveside seating to no more than 10 with masks being strongly encouraged. Other masked attendees are welcomed but will be expected to practice social distancing.
Graveside services, including burials, are likely to be held on ground that is uneven, which is out of the control of Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc. We ask that you take this into consideration when choosing footwear, such as shoes with high, thin heels. Please be advised that Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc. will not be held responsible for injuries at a grave site because of this.
Mr. Jimmy Porter Sr. was born March 11, 1942, in Buena Vista, Marion County, Georgia to the late Harrison Porter, Sr. and the late Mamie Walton Porter. Born in a family of fourteen siblings, he was preceded in death by eleven: C. J. Porter, Marion Maddox, Mary Sales, Harrison Porter, Jr. Julia Blue, Ella Pearl Ramsey, Carrie Lee Williams, Lucille Swan, James Edward Porter, Alma Ross and Nancy Porter.
He was educated in the public school system of Marion County. He obtained his Christian training in the Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Tazewell, Georgia whereas he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined the band of Christian believers. He served on the Financial Board for a number of years and supported every facet of the church he loved so well.
He retired from Tyson Food after 44 years. He also retired from Marion County Rural Water Department after 12 years.
Mr. Jimmy was united in holy matrimony to the former Ella Colbert in 1971 and to this union they were blessed with eight children. Survivors are a loving wife, Ella Colbert Porter, Buena Vista, Georgia; eight children and their spouses, Jimmy Porter, Jr. (Ruth), John Porter, Mary Porter all of Pompano Beach, Florida, Deborah Kelly (Willie), Janice P. Shivers (Christopher) all Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Calvin Colbert (Charisse) Buena Vista, Georgia, Kathryn Scott, Americus, Georgia and Gwen Porter (Teddy) Phenix City, Alabama; 21 Grandchildren (two preceded him in death) and 47 great grandchildren; two siblings, Louise Tennyson, Tazewell, Georgia and Irene Minter Buena Vista, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Terry, Satellite Beach, Florida, Sarah Thomas, Buena Vista, GA and one brother-in-law, Moses Ross, Buena Vista, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
