The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 110 Johnson Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia. Burial will follow at the Davis Chapel A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Hwy 26, Oglethorpe, Georgia.
Graveside services, including burials, are likely to be held on ground that is uneven, which is out of the control of Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc. We ask that you take this into consideration when choosing footwear, such as shoes with high, thin heels. Please be advised that Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc. will not be held responsible for injuries at a grave site because of this.
Irma Tookes was born in the small town of Oglethorpe, Georgia. On June 1, 1954, the late Willie Luke Tookes and Mary Lois Tookes gave birth to who would later become a loving, caring God fearing woman. Irma’s educational journey would start in the Macon County School System and help start her on her career path. She was a graduate of the 1973 Class of D.F. Douglass High School. Irma would eventually make Oglethorpe, Georgia her home and final resting place.
With a Christian foundation instilled in her, Irma joined Davis Chapel A.M.E. Church at a very early age. She would later relocate her membership to St. Paul A.M.E. Church and become an active member of the choir. St. Paul would be her final church home.
Irma was active for the early years of her life. She would work a number of years at Southern Frozen Foods, Inc. and eventually retire. However, Irma did not stop at retirement and maintained her zeal for staying active. She would go on to obtain her cosmetology license and finish her years as a beautician.
Irma was preceded in death by her mother, father, two siblings Queen Minter and Marvin Tookes, Sr., and two nieces Carolyn Edwards and Calandra Tookes.
On Thursday, February 16, 2023, God called Irma home to find peace in his Heavenly Kingdom. Irma Tookes leaves to remember her, her beloved three children Derronsdell “Marcel” Tookes, Perry, Georgia, N’Kema Freeman (Sean), Byron, Georgia, Alisha Harper, Warner Robins, Georgia; grandchildren Chazmine, Jaida, Izaiah, Sean, Reagan, Zirmarya, Zion, Kamiya, Derronsdell Jr., Ayden, and Lauryn; two great grandchildren Zain and Zaiah; siblings Henry Leonard Tookes (Naomi), Jacksonville, Florida, Willie Tookes, Ideal, Georgia, Mary Ann Tookes-Edwards, Montezuma, Georgia, Gloria Dean Thomas (Rev. James Thomas), Buena Vista, Georgia, Doddie Tookes, Oglethorpe, Georgia; a god-brother Lynn Tyson a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other close relatives and devoted cousins & friends Brenda Durham, Betty Sue Jones, Lula Tookes, Jennifer Johnson, Alma Jean Jones, Cussetta Journey, Lorna Mathis, and Kathy Ward Mann.
