Ira Lee Phillips, age 77, passed on March 27, 2023.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Andersonville National Cemetery Rostrum, 496 Cemetery Road, Andersonville, Georgia.
The final viewing will take place at the Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. The funeral procession will leave from the funeral home at 1:30 P.M.
Ira Lee Phillips, son of the late L.T. Phillips and Gladys Stroud Phillips, was born on January 23, 1945 in Miami, Dade County, Florida.
Ira attended the Miami public school system and graduated from Miami Northwest Senior High School. Ira enlisted into the United States Air Force October 8, 1963, and was honorably discharged October 6, 1967. During his service years he received many badges, ribbons and medals.
After leaving the Air Force, Ira lived in Tennessee and New York before settling down in Plainfield, New Jersey where he was employed at Howell Electric Motors and later working with the Public Works Department for the City of Plainfield also serving the community with his skills as a politician. After serving the City of Plainfield for 33½ years he retired and moved to Montezuma, Georgia.
One of Ira’s favorite pastimes was playing poker with the guys at the Bus station in Plainfield or a friendly game with family and friends. Ira was loving and kind and loved by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing and meeting him.
After a long battle with cancer, Ira finally succumbed to his illness on March 27, 2023; he took his last breath with his devoted wife and beloved son by his side.
He was predeceased by his sons Marcus and Malcolm Wilson; three brothers, Howard Brown, Lloyd Brown and Clemon Phillips; and sister Bernice Phillips. He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife of 43 years, Clestine (Chris) Phillips of Montezuma, Georgia, his children Harold Wilson, Tennessee; Kevin Carter, Plainfield, New Jersey; Salena Carter of Perry, Georgia; Tracy Brown, Atlanta, Georgia; brother Williams brown, Oglethorpe, Georgia; sisters Carol Brown, Virginia; and Dashann Williams, South Carolina. Fifteen grandchildren including two special ones, Sabrina Carter- Anderson, Plainfield, New Jersey and Justin Wilson of Tennessee; six great grandchildren; two sisters–in-law, Mary Ann Wheeler, San Diego, California and Sheila Rudolph, Virginia a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
