The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 6, 2023, at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 260 W. Allen Street, Leslie, Georgia. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Graveside services, including burials, are likely to be held on ground that is uneven, which is out of the control of Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc. We ask that you take this into consideration when choosing footwear, such as shoes with high, thin heels. Ira Lee Jones, affectionately known as Blimp, was born in Sumter County, Georgia on August 26, 1951. He was born to the late Mr. Eddie Lee Jones Sr. and the late Emma Spencer Jones. He received his education in the public schools of Sumter County, Georgia. He was a graduate of the Sumter County Class of 1969.
Early in life, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and united with the Tabernacle Baptist Church and Marthana Living Way of Christ. Deacon Jones served the Lord faithfully as a dedicated member and deacon.
His career included employment with the Leslie Peanut Gin, NIDRAH Plantation Inc, Hickory Springs, Davidson Rubber Company, the Late Dr. John D. Marshall, and Annie Statham.
Ira was a member of the Mason Lodge and A Few Good Men.
On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, Deacon Ira Jones' earthly journey came to a peaceful end. Along with his parents, he is also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mattie R Green Jones; his sister, Thelma McKenzie; his brothers, William Jones, Eddie Lee Jones, Jr., and Johnny Walker.
He leaves cherished memories to his loving children, Peggy Green, Linda (Rickey) Mack, Tammie Durham, all of Americus, GA, Christopher (Denise) James of Quitman, GA, and Presley Jones of Leslie, GA; seventeen grandchildren, four oh which he reared as his own Latoya Green, Alex Jordan, Jaquis Jones Sr., and Damion Jones; nine great grandchildren; two sisters, Ossie Bishop of Leslie, GA; Mary Lee (Leroy) Preston of Stone Mountain, GA; three brothers, Jessie (Gladys) Timmons, Reverend Willie Edward Walker, and Calvin (Rosemery) Jones, all of Leslie, GA; his sisters-in-law, Hattie (Thomas) Ferguson, Barbara (Don) Spikes, Shirley Johnson, all of Americus, GA, Cynthia (Mike) Gilbert of Atlanta, GA, and Loretta Jones of Jacksonville, FL; his brothers-in-law, Minister Walter (Carolyn) Green of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Bishop Willie (JoAnn) Greene of Miami, FL; Reverend Joseph (Beverly) Greene of Kathleen, GA, Pastor Leroy (Sandra) Greene, and David (Shunda) Green both of Americus, GA; devoted cousins, Sally White, Dorothy Bridges, Gladys Jones, Carolyn Jones, and Shirleen Williams; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends, to include his special devoted friends, Leroy Thomas, Albert Mitchell, Clifford Walton, Charlie Stewart, J. C. Bryant, Flate Wright and Lawrence Williams.
