The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Josh Gibson Center, Rogers Street, Buena Vista, Georgia. Reverend Andre Mathis will officiate. Interment will follow in the Buena Vista City Cemetery, Oliver Street, Buena Vista, Georgia. The remains will lay in state from 12:00 noon until the hour of service.
Brother Henderson Smith was born May 12, 1938 in Harris County, Georgia to the late Anderson Smith and Carrie Bell Smith. He was educated in the public school system of Harris County. Brother Smith was united in holy matrimony to the former Evelyn Hollis, and to this union, they were blessed with five children. One daughter, Casheta Smith, and sister, Emma Bellamy, preceded him in death.
Brother Smith was a dedicated member of Hall Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church of Buena Vista, Georgia, where he served on the Steward Board. He also sung with the Golden Stars Gospel Singers. After forty years of dedicated services, he retired from Cargil Poultry Plant.
He leaves a legacy of love and many wonderful memories to his beloved family, including his loving and devoted wife, Evelyn Hollis Smith, Columbus, Georgia; five children, Gary Smith, Sr. (Kail), Columbus, Georgia, Tracy Smith, Laketa Smith, Carlos Smith (Krystal), all of Atlanta, Georgia, and Linda Lewis, Eufaula, Alabama; fourteen grandchildren, Doshonna Smith, Gary Smith, Jr., Shonyette Smith, Shanchez Smith, Ashley Taylor, LaDarrien Taylor, Erykah Smith, Tracie Smith, Endya Robinson, Tajo Halt, Bishop Smith, Tristen Smith, Leontay Houser and Kjnique Rogers; seven great grandchildren; four siblings, Bessie Bridges, Buena Vista, Georgia, Willie Robert Smith, Hamilton, Georgia, Emerson Smith (Betty), LaGrange, Georgia, and Lester Smith, Pine Mountain, Georgia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, James Hollis (Claudia) Dana, Florida and Thelma Hollis, Buena Vista, Georgia; two goddaughters, Nacaine Thompson, Ozella Walter; a host of nieces and nephews, including one devoted, Chanta Mizrahi, Phoenix City, Alabama; other relatives and beloved friends.
