Mother Hattie Mae Holmes was born June 19, 1927, in Dooly County Georgia to the late Arthur Holmes and Eula Leary Holmes. She was educated in the public-school system of Dooly County. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined the Christian believers at Little Poplar Spring Baptist church, Byromville, Georgia. She served as mother of the church, choir members and supported every facet of the church she loved so well. She loved to hear her pastor, Reverend Jerome Clover preach and sing.
She was the loving mother of eight children whom she loved dearly and they loved her too. A daughter Rosetta Holmes and a son, 2nd Apostle Frank Holmes preceded her in death. Her children, grand’s, and great-grand’s all called her “Ma”, even people that met her for the first time. Ma never met a stranger, so she said what she meant and meant what she said.
She loved working, gardening, sewing, cooking, fishing and raising livestock…hogs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, dogs, cats, you name it and she would give it a try. Her favorite animal was her pet dog, Jasmine, Ma loved traveling and she kept on her traveling shoes. She was a lady of character and was the Queen of the Holmes Family. She had a remedy for any and every ailment except for “sore knees”. She would always say “if my knees wasn’t hurting”.
Ma leaves a legacy of love and many fond memories to her beloved children; Mattie Ree Shaw Glover (Willie Oscar, Jr.) Montezuma, Georgia, Willie Holmes, Montezuma, Georgia, Willie Benjamin (Lisa), Palm Beach, Florida, Mary Holmes, Broxton, Georgia, Betty Clark, Ft.
