A wake service will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the Josh Gibson Center, Rogers Street, Buena Vista, Georgia.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Mahalia Chapel A.M.E. Church, 16 Mahalia Road, Buena Vista, Georgia. The Reverend Jerald Harris, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Andersonville National Cemetery Rostrum, Cemetery Road, Andersonville, Georgia with military honors.
Gregory Shawn Wooden was born in Marion County, Georgia July 24, 1973 to Armarie Johnson Wooden and the late Willie Oliver Wooden, Jr. He was educated in the public school system of Marion County where he was a 1991 graduate of the historic Tri-County High School. While in high school he played with the Tri-County Eagle Football Team. After high school he enlisted into the United States Army in 1992 where he was the recipient of many metals, ribbons and badges. The flag that drapes his casket is given by a grateful nation for the services rendered to his country.
Life for Gregory was very rewarding, as he went on and enrolled in trade school for tractor trailer driving. He then went on to work for several companies which included the following: Sniders Trucking Company, Thomas Concrete, Saia Trucking Company, and Quick Crete.
Gregory took an interest in his community and he diligently search for organizations that also cares for the community at large. He joined the Sons of Buena Vista Masonic Lodge A&FM No. 446, Al-Faruk Temple No. 145 of Columbus, Georgia, St. Andrews Chapter No. 39 HRAM, D.P. Nesbitt No. 5 Knight Templers, Isaac Brown Council No. 6 and R&SM.
At a young age, Gregory accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined the band of Christian believers at Mahalia Chapel A.M.E. Church where he remained until his demise.
He leaves a legacy of love and many fond memories to his beloved family which include his daughter, TaNycia S. Wooden, Atlanta, Georgia; mother, Armarie Johnson Wooden, Buena Vista, Georgia; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Darius Wooden (Terri) Americus, Georgia and Jeffrey Wooden, Buena Vista, Georgia; aunts and uncles Carolyn Wooden, Hartford, Connecticut, Aytch Wooden, Jr., Fort Valley, Georgia, Maurice Mann, Katherine Callaway and Fern Wooden, all of Bloomfield, Connecticut, Lejeson Chatman, Milledgeville, Georgia, Willie Mae Jackson (L.C.) , Evelyn Spencer (Retired Sgt Major Robert), Gladys Boykin all of Columbus, Georgia, Curlie Johnson (Inez) Lexington, South Carolina, Patricia Thrash (Retired Sgt. Latimer) and Reverend Walter Lee Johnson all of Columbus, Georgia; nieces and nephews, Dominque Muff, Sharde Muff, Cordero Cannon, Bianca Muff, Chanequa Wooden, Derenski Wooden and Quinton Walters; a host of beloved cousins; a host of friends including Bernard Bradford, Ocala, Florida.
