The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, October 9, 2023, at the Josh Gibson Center, 20 Gibson Way, Buena Vista, Georgia. Burial will follow at Evans Chapel C.M.E. Church Cemetery, Webster County, Georgia.
Graveside services, including burials, are likely to be held on ground that is uneven, which is out of the control of Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc. Essie James Thomas was born July 11, 1945, to the late William McKinley Thomas and the late Ida Mae Robinson Thomas. He was preceded in death by two siblings, George William Thomas and Leila Mae Thomas Pough. He received his education in the public school system of Marion County whereas he was a graduate of Buena Vista High School. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army. Essie worked as a carpenter with Redman Mobile Home. He also worked for sixteen years at Marion County Sheriff Department.
He was a member of Evans Chapel C.M.E. Church where he served as a Chairman for 35 years.
He leaves to cherish his memories to his siblings, Eula Clay Green, Buena Vista, Georgia, Willie Roy Thomas, Buena Vista, Georgia, Doris Milner (Jimmy), Columbus, Georgia, and Bobbie Thomas, Buena Vista, Georgia; a host of nieces and nephews including three he raised as his own, Sarah Royal, Rosie Swan, Jacquelyn Meadows, a devoted nephew Henry Thomas, Steve Walker of Atlanta, Ga and Eric Walker of Largo, Florida whom was raised as his own; aunts, Susie Mae West, Hartford, Connecticut; sister-in-law, Doris A. Thomas; devoted friends, Willie Frank Wimbush, Willie James Hudson, Willie Carson, and Samuel Hall.
