The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 260 W Allen Street, Leslie, Georgia. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Graveside services, including burials, are likely to be held on ground that is uneven, which is out of the control of Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc. We ask that you take this into consideration when choosing footwear, such as shoes with high, thin heels. Joel Newsome, Sr., was born December 31, 1938, to the parentage of the late Dea. Sidney and late Susie Newsome in Leslie, GA. on December 10, 2023, he departed this earthly life in the solitude of his home.
He was married to Claudia Thomas Newsome for twenty-nine years. Their union was blessed with six children. At an early age, he joined the Zion Hill Baptist Church, Leslie, Georgia. Upon moving to Jacksonville, Florida, he connected with Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church. There he served as Sabbath School Teacher and Superintendent, and Elder.
While in Jacksonville, he worked with city services department, water division, for over twenty-eight years before returning to Georgia. When he relocated in Leslie, Georgia, he worked for the Sumter County Schools System in the Transportation Department. He attended Buena Vista Seventh Day Adventist Church until his health declined.
Joel was dedicated to his calling to spread the word of God. He diligently and heartily distributed tracks and books to his neighbors near and far.
His legacy of love and affection is left, with mended hearts and the Peace of God to his children: Jacquelyn Newsome, Parrottsville, Tennessee, Karl Newsome (Tamala), Scappoose, Oregon, Thalia Miller (Kenneth), Jacksonville, Florida, Joel Newsome Jr. (Sonja), Jacksonville, Florida, Tonia Williams (Leonard), Parrottsville, Tennessee, and Tabitha Newsome, Parrottsville, Tennessee, Nine Grand children and seven great grandchildren. Siblings Jesse Fields (Gloria) Anderson, South Carolina, Annie Bell Gray, Trenton, New Jersey, and Jacob Phils (Anna), Garrysburg, North Carolina. A host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many sorrowing friends also survive.
