A wake service will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, January 18, 2019 at the Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, 607 Kaigler Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia.
The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 noon, Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church, Railroad Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia. Elder Alonza Austin, III, pastor and Elder Van Snead, moderator of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Association will officiate. Interment will follow in the Oglethorpe City Cemetery.
Deacon English was born January 28, 1944 in Macon County, Georgia to the late Deacon Oscar B. English, Sr. and the late Artie Zell Lumpkin English. Seven siblings, Cora Dean English Tookes, Virginia English Wiggins, Philmore English, Elder Oscar B. English, Jr., Rosanna English, Doris English White Snead, and Willie Bell English, preceded him in death.
He was educated in the Macon County Public School system where he was a 1962 graduate of the historic D. F. Douglass High School. In 1963 he was united in holy matrimony to the former Aldyne Pride. He was blessed to be the father of three children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One grandson, Brandon A. Harris, preceded him in death.
After high school Deacon English moved to Florida and after a period of time he moved to New York City. For twenty five years he was employed as a bus driver with the New York City Transit System where he retired and moved back to Georgia in 2004. He continued to drive buses and made long distance trips for Tystanic Travel Agency of Americus, Georgia.
In 1989 Deacon English joined the Wisdon Lodge No. 57 Ancient, Free & Accepted Mason of New York where he became a gold card holder. He joined Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and overseer of the church and properties. “Servant of God well done, Rest from thy love employ, the battle is fought, the victory is won, enter thy Master’s joy.”
He leaves a legacy of love and spiritual guidance to his beloved family which include three children and their spouses, Alphonzo Harris (Beverly), Oglethorpe, Georgia, Alisa English Shepard (Craig), Patchogue, New York, and Alfred G. English, Jr. (Michele), Bayshore, New York; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren; three siblings and their spouses, Nathaniel English (Elizabeth), Andersonville, Georgia, Artie Zell English Schofield (Walter), and Ruby English Ludaway all of Jacksonville, Florida; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Margret English, Oglethorpe, Georgia, Elder Van Snead, Orange Park, Florida, Milton English (Bessie), Oglethorpe, Georgia, Crawford Pride (Earlene), Dothan, Alabama, James Pride Jr. (Ann), Americus, Georgia, and Ella Hargett, Brooklyn, New York; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
