Remembering Charles
Our beloved G. Charles Tyson was born August 21, 1949, to the parentage of the late Lucille Clemons Tyson and Albert Tyson in Ellaville, Schley County, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Clemons Williamson.

Charles was educated in the public school system of Sumter County.  He graduated from Staley High School in Americus, Georgia. After graduating from high school, Charles moved to Hartford, Connecticut.  He became a skilled painter under the guidance of his cousin.

After returning from Connecticut, he lived in Americus, Georgia then later moved to Andersonville, Georgia. He became employed with Ray Trucking Company. Charles made history by becoming the first African American to hold a seat as a City Councilman of Andersonville, Georgia. He held this position for over ten years. Charles was employed at CE Minerals Mulcoa as a kill operator. He retired in 2014 after 30 years of dedicated service.

Charles was honored in Andersonville, Georgia by having a street (Tyson Street) named after him.  Tyson Street replaced Robert E. Lee Street. He was an avid gardener.  During the summer months, you could look forward to eating some of his delicious watermelons, peaches, plums, scuppernongs, and tomatoes. And during football season you would find him watching his "dirty birds."  He was a diehard Falcons fan. Win or lose they were his "dirty birds" to the end.

Charles loved his family, especially his grandchildren and that love was reciprocated. His grandchildren kept him motivated. Charles had a heart of gold with a laugh out of this world. He would have a welcoming conversation with anyone he met because he never met a stranger.

Growing up in a Christian home, Charles knew that serving the Lord was a top priority; therefore, he joined the band of Christian believers at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Andersonville, Georgia. He served in numerous facets of the church that he loved so dearly.

On June 24, 2022, God called Charles’ name.  A loved one that filled our hearts is gone. He has no pain or sorrow in his heavenly home. God loved him best.

He leaves five devoted children to cherish his memories; Carlos Dimitris Tyson (Betty), Americus, Georgia, Michealos Ramon Tyson (Fatima), Loganville, Georgia, Renae Howard, Perry, Georgia, Ayesha “Babygirl” Tyson, Kathleen, Georgia and Chad Woodham, Maryland; a host of grandchildren  and one great grand; siblings; William E. Clemons, Andersonville, Georgia, Doris Briggs (George) and Alice Ferguson (Eugene) all of Americus, Georgia, Nancy Holden (Gregory), Tallahassee, Florida, Sandra Briggs, Lawrenceville, Georgia, Deborah Dickson (Rev. Daniel), Decatur, Georgia, Bethlyne Pamela Bryant (Eric), Lawrenceville, Georgia, Rev. Ferlin Tyson (Minister Belinda), Leesburg, Georgia; two devoted uncles; Cooper Webster Clemons, Andersonville, Georgia and Horace Tyson Atlanta, Georgia; two aunts; Daisy Clifton, Jamaica, New York and Rosa Mae Clemons, Americus, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including three devoted friends; Eugene Barnum, Nannette Hill and Edward Williams.

My condolences to the Tyson family. Charles was a joy to talk to. I would see him at Lowes in Americus and talk him up about those glory football days at Staley High. He inspired me as a football player. He will be missed.
