Cooper, “Po Boy”, “Papa”, as he was affectionately called by family and friends, was a strong tower. He was someone that you could lean on and trust. Our family patriarch, Cooper Webster Clemons, passed away peacefully at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, surrounded by family. He was 98 years old.
“Well done thy good and faithful Servant. Rest from thy loved employ. The battle is fought, the victory is won. Enter thy Master's joy.”
Cooper was born on October 25, 1925, to the parentage of the late John Clemons and the late Willie Lou Mathis Clemons in Andersonville, Georgia. He attended the public school system of Schley County, Ellaville, Georgia. Cooper found the love of his life, the late Kate Hill Clemons. The two united in holy matrimony and then moved to New York City for a better life. To this union three children were born. While in New York he served as a member of the Community Church of Astoria. He was employed as an Engineer for Scalamandre in Long Island, New York. After 40 years of dedicated services, he retired and moved back to his native home in Andersonville, Georgia. It was then that he joined the band of Christian believers at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Andersonville, Georgia where he served as a Steward and sang in the church choir. Cooper knew the humility and godliness of hard work. As caretaker, he painted and repaired his beloved church to give it an outstanding appearance.
Cooper took care of many people but was humble about receiving. His son, Lenoris, and grandson, Kaseem, accompanied him through his twilight years to his favorite McDonalds and Burger King to enjoy a simple breakfast of grits, eggs, and coffee. Cooper was a sharp dresser who learned to be a stylish gentleman from his father and from living in New York. He used to drive down to Georgia year after year in his baby blue Caprice Classic. Everybody he knew in Georgia had the opportunity to share in a ride of luxury while he dedicated his time to his dear Aunts Etha, Louvenia and Bertha, as well as his beloved sister Lucille and her ten children. Cooper’s faithful nephew, William “Crow” Clemons and his five children, Kathy, Jan, Tracy, Kim, Kelvin, and grandchildren took to him as their patriarch. A birthday, Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas never went by without the doting arms of their beloved uncle that anyone else could only wish for. His favorite phrases were: “The Lord’s been good to me,” “What can you do?” and “God is good.” Cooper was preceded in death by his sisters Louise Clemons Wallace and Lucille Clemons Tyson, brothers Thomas Clemons, John “J- Man” Clemons, Arthur Clemons, William “Bill” Clemons, Idias Clemons, Daniel Clemons, and son in law John McKie.
His life will forever be memorialized in the lives of his children: Lenoris Clemons, Nanzetta McKie and Bernard Clemons of Woodside New York; eight grandchildren including one devoted, Kaseem Skinner, Andersonville, Georgia; Jasmine Clemons, Nicole Porter, Tasha Porter, Jovon McKie, Jerell McKie, Jordan McKie, Aarin Clemons; thirteen great grandchildren: Louis Moore, Amina Fulton, K’Lani Fulton, Jyemere McKie, Jazariah McKie Jovon McKie Jr., Je-Rell A.
