Arneatha Thornton Miller was born to Thomas C. and Mary Cheatham Thornton in Farmville, Virginia, on September 3, 1931. She departed this life on Monday, August 25th, 2025.
At an early age, Mrs. Miller accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord & Savior and joined Race Street Baptist Church in Farmville, Virginia. She attended and worked faithfully in the church until she left Farmville in 1948 to attend Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1950, while still a student, she met her future husband, William Harris Miller, of Marshallville, Georgia. After receiving a bachelor's degree in education in 1952 and William was honorably discharged from The United States Army, they married on June 3, 1955, in Farmville, Virginia. Shortly after the young couple married, they moved to The Bronx, New York. They resided there for 10 years. A decision was made to leave New York due to their growing family so a family home was purchased in Montclair, New Jersey where she worked as a teacher in Passaic, New Jersey and William worked as an industrial mechanic for Ford Motor Company in Mahwah, New Jersey.
To continue the farming tradition in the Miller family, the family moved to Marshallville, Georgia, in 1969. She began teaching in the Georgia School System at Lamson-Richardson School in Marshallville for 1 year and Macon County Junior High School in Oglethorpe for 25 years. She retired in 1996 with 34 years of service & was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Miller was an active member of her church and was involved in various church activities. She always did whatever was asked of her. She joined St. James C.M.E. Church in Marshallville in 1970. In 1980 she moved her membership to Greater Union Missionary Baptist Church in Perry. She was a faithful Baptist member and worked diligently in several ministries. As a church member she served in the following capacities:
- a member of the Senior Choir,
- a vacation Bible school teacher,
- the program coordinator of church programs,
- a member of the hospitality ministry, &
- a finance secretary for many years
She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Miller; her parents Thomas and Mary Thornton; and her grandson, Malcolm Miller Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory two devoted children, Thomas Miller & Karen Miller-Heard, and another son, Malcolm Miller. Mrs. Miller’s legacy of love continues through her grandchildren (youngest – oldest): Kellen Heard, Karmen Heard, Kevin Jackson, & Arneatha Miller.
Also cherishing her memory is her one sister-in-law, Louise Miller-Campbell, & a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mrs. Miller will be remembered for her faith, laughter, and the unconditional love she gave so freely. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her love will live in the hearts of all who knew her.
